i haven't yet, but probably FF15
well, last mission appeared on map, so i'm mostly delaying the completition, doing most of the sidequests

so, not yet

almost finished my first one this year, i just took a break from fighting the frustrating final boss (though mostly due to my shitty controller rather than an inherent flaw in the design). still, i think i chose a good franchise to properly get into this year, especially considering how it kinda ties into my goals and hopes for 2026.

there's also some games i (re)started last year that i expect to only finish a good bit into this year, i wonder which month i'll beat them. i'm gonna guess march for one of them, that seems like a decent bet.

anyways the first game i beat in 2026 is:

1. ape escape

i started this game after christmas due to thegamingbrit's new video on the series. i initially wanted to start with 3 but decided to save it for later. i thought beating it would be a good start to the year for the following reasons:

-it's a fairly notable series i've never played before
-i know that 3 lets you choose a girl player character, which is good for me since i'm planning to finally get on estrogen this year. the childlike nature of her and the game's presentation should do well to help me retroactively experience some of the girlhood i couldn't as a kid, similarly to how cardcaptor sakura did so for me earlier this year
-it's one of the most notable examples of non-standard control schemes, something i want to incorporate in my own games
-i wanted it to be something that couldn't just be beaten in an evening for a first timer, that's not a replay, and that isn't something that barely counts like civilization

my thoughts on the game: yeah it's a vibe. the controls work really well and the game serves as a really solid foundation, though some of the enemies and bosses have me questioning how on earth they could've thought that they were good ideas. i'm pretty sure that 3 has more spread out bosses, which makes me hopeful that the enemy and boss design will be better there. looking forward to it, but probably not in the first few months.

Well, I only managed to beat the final boss after midnight, so Digimon Story: Cybersleuth

Literally got a similar idea with Castlevania Adventure Rebirth, but then said "nah, as long as it's January 1st it's fine".

They did one for the Super Famicom/SNES.
