I refuse to recognize the fifth generation as proper retro, particularly the PSX, but:
I've been playing Gran Turismo 2. I elected to start with a
Mazda Familia GT-X '92 -- it's a moderate-spec 4WD with 180 HP stock, all for around 5700 credits. The remainder, while not enough for a new pair of sport tires, is enough for some engine upgrades to put it right up against 200 HP proper. It's a heavier car, though -- about 2700lbs. It is, in combination, both extremely stable and a little sluggish around corners. A very forgiving drive, and able to pull out faster than most opponents in the B-license 200 HP league races. However, not at all appropriate for rally. You'll get smoked.
And, surprisingly, I put some time into Shadow Tower. It's a rough game that doesn't really explain itself well, or present itself well, or control well. But, it does have this promise of perpetual self-improvement because enemies provide immediate stat upgrades rather than XP upgrades.
So, there's a slime out there that will make you attack harder the moment you squash it.
