Games that looked competent and good but are very dissapointing

consider this

1.) I dont really like mmo's, just not for me really, tried to get into a couple and it never stuck. I like to be an active participant in the battle

2.) I hate having my time wasted by a game and think everything should be meaningful and there should be no pointless content. The sidequests were pointless except for the one. the size of the areas was pointless they could have been shrunken by 50 to 75 precent and i think nothing would really be lost in the world design.

Yeah MMO design isn't particularly good, IMO. The MMOs can get away with it because of the social aspect, but a single player MMO doesn't work.

I think it can work but it needs clear design-changes that its more suited for the singleplayer . But it would be more like an open-world RPG at the end instead being an MMO-like.

While i like the MMO design of leveling and its mechanics , it needs to trim down on its EXP requirements boost up in its use of all the skills , making the player depended on many different NPCs and their roles with their according skills .

But it depends if its more sandbox or story-focused overall.

It could be done and the possibilities are there but its bounded what the game should be .
More like a Videogame-form TTRPG with no overarching story but own adventures to plan out or something akin to Final Fantasy 1 with an huge world but with set goals to beat the game and its story ?

I think former needs more to be tried but thats my opinion.

I had a dream when i was 8th grade it started since 5th grade that was i wanted to play this game

Yup i wanted to play RA3 I'm like the number 1 red alert fanboy in the world.

I didn't care what people said i played 1 and 2 and in 2018 i got to finally FINALLY play RA3....it was an amazing experience the soundtrack is easily the best in the series you probably heard soviet March somewhere on the internet and it originated from this game.

The UI is great the menus are very red alert style even the loading screens have tips and such all making for a better experience....it won't take long however until the game showed how terrible it is as a CNC game note why i say as a "CNC game"? Because CNC has a particular style of gameplay that set it apart from WarCraft and Starcraft.

You see the success of Starcraft popularized the Esports scene from what i know its Starcraft that made the Esports a thing to begin with well by 2007/2008 Starcraft was still going strong even after around 10 years and EA wanted some of that Esports popularity and money they had the highly valued and much loved CNC franchise the direct competitor to blizzard RTS and what happens to CNC as a result? THIS GAME HAPPENS.

OK what's wrong with RA3? man the gameplay and the artstyle i talked about the artstyle in a thread about worst redesign in games but i didn't discuss gameplay and oh god how disappointing of a gameplay for a CNC game if you ever played CNC you would know we gather resources using miners who gather from fields of tibereum/gold well screw that we are giving you gold mines! Yay everyone we copied WarCraft 3 we did it comrades we made CNC great again! But hold up every unit has a special ability wait what? When was CNC all about micro? Well it is now and you can't do anything about it! Remember this explosive gameplay where you could chronosphere a platoon of prism tanks and blow everything to bits in an awesomely drawn 2d artstyle of red alert 2? You no longer can do that as much well this aspect of insanely fast killing time and wiping out an army in span of seconds is still there but tuned down so much in RA2 you could get 4 apocalypse tanks and enjoy as you wreck havoc watching the poor allies trying to scramble whatever pathetic tank they have to fight your soviet power supreme back oh yeah units no longer have this power they had in previous games you had to go "muh balanced army combo" LIKE NO CNC WAS FUN CUZ IT'S SIMPLE GAMEPLAY LOOP WAS GREAT putting this sort of blizzard style additions made the game require more skill to play creating for a great PVP mode but at the cost of destroying the essence of what made CNC great.

Yes i enjoy red alert 3 but not as a CNC game rather a good RTS in the future i plan to make a YT channel and one of the videos will be about this very topic.

Also a personal problem of mine is how clownish the soviets became in 3 the conscripts sound awful compared to 2 the apocalypse tank tried too hard to sound intimidating while RA2 apocalypse tank just didn't need to try at all to sound scary , the KIROV the iconic soviet Zeppelin also sounds like what one guy described "a fat American pilot" instead of the cold and calculated RA2 kirov pilots even the "KIROV REPORTING" doesn't hit the same as 2.

Also the story feels like a very silly comedy movie i get CNC always had comedy moments but at least it took itself seriously to extent i don't care how many celebrities you bring or the overused "SPACE" joke it's not enough the game never has the threatening and urgent feeling of threat RA2 had where the allies campaign had you run from state to state trying to desperately fight the soviets back like they didn't even win by land invasion they had to use the chronosphere to win without it they couldn't even hope to win that's how impressively strong the soviets were in RA2.

So yeah a game that tried to compete against the king of Esports and as a result the gameplay suffered from deviations of the core fundamental gameplay the series was built that is simple and fun CNC doesn't need big brain to play it's not complex nor is supposed to be if you want complex RTS then it's next door called WarCraft 3 and age of empires 2.

Also the submarines in 3 are dumb why i can see them as the enemy without the need of special sonar or something that reveals them? In RA2 subs were scary cuz without destroyers allied fleets were easy target to the merciless typhoon attack subs the soviets fielded +the typhoons sound better than the akula subs of RA3.

Shame cuz the game has cool art like this

Special agent tanya of the allies along with the iconic german Shepard dogs and the peacekeepers.

One positive aspect is air combat is great in this game.

So bad CNC game , great RTS game.

i hate to break it too you Graw but maybe Metroid isnt for you. Metroid didnt really have much of a backstory for Samus other than Ridley and Chozo dump. Super Metroid and Prime 1 are the only examples cause the series is meant to be about adventure not some exploration game were you sequence break all throughout the series. I think you put too much expectations on a series that was about collecting power ups to defeat the boss area, and it being an adventure game not an exploration game.
You also sound very jaded with these games, maybe Metroid isnt for you. Just my 2 cents.
I agree with you. I don't really like the series as a whole. I pretty much just Metroid 1, Super Metroid, AM2R and Prime 1. I didn't mind Prime 2 but it felt like a rip off of A Link to the Past and the ammo system bothered me. Zero Mission and Fusion were alright but I didn't like the way they held your hand.

For me, "Zelda Tears of Kingdom".

AAA game from Nintendo, great open world and lots to explore, interesting fight mechanic and I loved the flying parts, BUT...
- Lego-like mechanic felt very clunky, and I totally hated the mandatory parts with this gimmick
- the long scrolling menu in battle isn't really intuitive to use
- all the world had those faded colors, thinking of it I remember only bare plains, bare caves and bare desert/volcano rocks... just to make an example, "YS VIII" shines in how vibrant and diverse the island felt, a joy to explore
- all in all I found the whole game a bit boring, I finished it because I spent 60 on it on day-one (power of strong advertisment and leaked videos, I'm not a Zelda fan but I was attracted by open world + flying).

I've sold it right after finishing it.

Nirvana Initiative. I'm still willing to give Uchikoshi another chance, but out of every single game I've bought and completed, it is the one I harbor the absolute most spite towards, and I doubt that position will ever change.

This is very interesting to read for me, as I think Red Alert 3 is my personal favorite, being a lifetime CnC fan myself.

I actually like the way they streamlined the economy system. Don't get me wrong, harvesters are a fun and perfectly fine system, but the ore nodes encourage people to play around them, planning expansions, defense, harassment, etc. The game's economy isnt as explosive as RA2's, or even KW's, but that allows for more calculated and frugal playing that isnt found in those games. Every unit; every structure matters. RA2 is more fun in a casual setting yeah, but lets be real for a moment, spamming tanks and ore miners can be fun only for so long.
Abilities and extra micro options for your units makes what used to be a 4v4 ring-around-the-rosie, into an interesting scenario to turn the tides in whatever fashion you can. For example, Hammers are more powerful than tsunamis, but those tsunamis can still win that less favored engagement with proper use of reverse move and nano deflectors. But lets say, Lashers vs Rhinos? Unless you screw up big time, the rhinos will win, every time.
Competitive play was focused on big time, as you say, but it payed off and offers a unique experience for the people willing to sink their teeth into it; RA3 offers a different kind of skill expression that you can't get out of other CnC games, or even other RTS games either (like...starcraft...2 ::sickening).
But RA3 has great moments for casual play as well. The co-op campaign was tons of fun, even on your own, and it was still a pretty typical story for a red alert game, even if it was a little sillier (the game itself is also pretty goofy, but I like that ::cirnoshrug)
Some other small things, the games OST is great, and the game itself looks fantastic, considering the fact that it was released in 2008 (a rushed release, at that). Also we're just gonna act like chronosphereing mirage tanks, or IFV tanya isnt gonna melt a base in seconds? Or that submarines (especially boomers) aren't BS units in RA2 (granted that naval combat isnt as important)?

If you're interested, I'd recommend a few videos from XYHC, who explained this game's design philosophy in depth. Very good watches, if you haven't seen them already.
(All CnC games have tons of redeeming qualities, EXCEPT CnC4, or the mobile games, IMO ::sailor-embarrassed)

Dragon Age: The Veilguard

While the environments look fantastic, the game's so linear and simplistic.
