Which version of Baroque do you recommend?
OK I can answer this one pretty well as I've played all but some of the mobile ports and the switch port.
OK so I started with the Wii version of the game. A lot of people will say skip this one. It has a bit more of an anime aesthetic, a new soundtrack, a third person camera by default (though I highly recommend switching to first person for that old-school vibe) and if I remember right; has most if not all of the content added to the PSX release earlier on. It's not bad; but it's sort of like a new take on an old classic. I'd recommend playing it if you just want to see a different vibe or if you really enjoy games with aesthetics a little closer to your Persona type rpg's. I love it for what it is; and I love it's intro cinematic tho I wouldn't say it tops the OG..This game isnt the best version but it's what got me to fall in love with Baroque fwiw!
Now the Saturn vs's the PSX version is interesting. If you play the game on saturn then you won't have any of the additional content like the new dungeon; but some people feel like that's unneeded padding that adds more slog to a 100% completion run. The saturn version has some really nice sort of horror/noir lighting for it's textures and things like transparency are done in that dithered saturn way of doing things. It's a really beautiful old game! ..But it's Saturn. Emulation has gotten a lot better for it; granted, but I feel like playstation emulation generally feels a lot less finicky to set up and play at times...that said you can totally do it and if you have a good emulation setup for it then you might really end up preferring this one's vibe!
Lastly the psx version. This one gets maligned sometimes for the textures not looking as highcontrast/noir-esque. There's some of the padding that some people love or hate..but fwiw this is a very complete version of Baroque? You get all the extra stuff like the log , item storage system, and extra dungeon, but it's still a lot closer aesthetically to the retro horror vibes of the saturn version then-say the wii version is.
On a side note; there's a ps2 version of Baroque and I believe this is just a port of the Wii edition without motion controls. On a side side note; if you play Baroque Wii; consider playing it with a classic controller and again; in first person for imo the more authentic "Baroque" experience.
....oops we're talking about my favorite game in the universe so I'm sorry if this became a wall of text ^^; but I hope it helps!
