I'm thinking if I should follow more of those. I follow Kaze Emanuar, who is actually a N64 romhacker, but the explanations and overhauls he does regarding technical stuff, as well his artistic work, do overlap with gamedev quite often.

I enjoy Design Doc, 8-bit music theory, Game Maker's Toolkit, video game animation study, white_pointer gaming and Retro Game Mechanics Explained for gamedev channels. There's some other ones but those are the main gamedev ones I watch.

Yahtzee Croshaw has a series called "Dev Diaries" in which he makes simple games on a self-imposed time crunch and explains the process behind them.

It's really interesting.

TBH any video that explains how particular video game can be modded is valuable to learn about video game development to understand the logic at least.

For example when you watch a video that the guy explains what's the logic of inventoy hacking directly the game as it runs or save file editing, thus you will understand how a video game save system should be to apply it to your own video games.

For example I gained immerse knowledge by trying to hack tri-Ace video games and learned the ropes of best way to optimize video games and advanced usage of tiny chunk of machine codes.

So learning programming language and learning how to create assets that can be used in video games are one side of the medallion as the other side is how video game should be developed and tons of systems that makes of a game can be merged to make it run in best way you can to ensure bug free game as much as you can. So any video or Youtuber explains these are valuable, in fact necessary to learn how to develop a video game.

Because of it video game companies may wanna hire modders because modders are in the way they already have the right mentality to be able to develop a video game. Even simple model or texture swap in video games are in the way you need "video game developer" skill and the way of thinking.

This thread is meant to be broad to all kinds of content, but when it comes to my preference I'd rather have videos that carefully elaborate concepts or life experiences over ones that are more spontaneous like "look, I did this in one day in Unity! Now I'm gonna add this other thing and see what happens!"

Also I want to share these specific videos:

The later one isn't even about a game being developed, but the knowledge could absolutely be useful for making one with such art style.

Gonna share some stuff that relates to my interests, but I'm not sure if this is going to be useful for you... These folks are usually tinkering with ASM 65c816, so they're doing stuff out of passion...

(Polinym is an EB romhacker but also does a bunch of shitpost hacks, so be advised lmao)

(next guy is the equivalent of a "Kaze Emanuar for the SNES", but he would share more interesting stuff in his discord server and github... he has done tons of SNES disassemblies)

And now for absolute beginners, but still useful if you want to recollect some foundational concepts or just follow his game design insights... Also, high level programming lol:

Well, I mean they're not strictly about game dev. More about the fundamentals of thinking and solving problems like a programmer, so more low-level and broadly applicable than the general gamedev skillset. Granted, I realize they have since been posted. Anyway, here's a link to the Harvard website's page/directory for all of the courseware materials. Assuming it's accurate. The website is not accessible on my present network, so I'm not equipped to check.
