I'm a big fan of Leiji Matsumoto, in the sense that I love his characters designs and world building. I was introduced to it in Interstella 5555 but never took the plunge into his own works out of fear it would disappoint me as a result of being old anime, pre 1980, and those are very hit and miss. I was very familiar with it and loved how he does literally everything in terms of designs. Macross started as a parody of Space battleship yamato as an example when it comes to his influence on sci-fi anime, matching that of Moebius for sure.

I finally took the plunge and bought all the galaxy express related media on blu ray that I could. I was not able to get eternal fantasy, waiting for that to go back in print.

So I started watching it, I am 10 episodes in and I absolutely adore it. I cannot understate how magical it is. I grew up with older anime in general, but many shows from before 85 are very hit and miss in quality and animation. I tend to not want to get invested in long running older anime after Hokuto no ken burnt me out. Perhaps HNK just wasn't to my taste, but I loved the movies and games though so it was definitely the quality being all over the place.

I will say that for some, GE 999 will just be a borefest, so take my praises with a grain of salt.

Yeah, Leiji was incredible when he was still with us. I'd recommend Space Battleship Yamato and Captain Harlock as well if you've never watched/read them before. Those 2, along Galaxy Express, are easily his most seminal works that I'd recommend to anyone looking to get into his stuff.
