Hey everyone!

I’d like to suggest a fun idea for the forum: style-based member ranks! Instead of (or alongside) traditional ranks like "Newbie" or "Veteran," we could have ranks inspired by fashion/style themes — like "Casual," "Chic," "Icon," "Trendsetter," etc.

It could be a cool way to reflect our individuality and add a bit more personality to member profiles. Maybe ranks could be based on post count, engagement, or community voting.

What do you think? Would love to hear your ideas on possible style categories or how we could implement this!

Nah. This forum's already hard enough to look at as it is with all the ridiculous style formatting. It's almost like myspace again sometimes.
Well mane not our fault that you're photosensitive

But I dunno, might be good but might be the first step to a elitist community LMAO or maybe I'm overthinking

I don't like having stuff like "VIP" in there, given that even Ko-Fi Supporters have asked to have their badges removed due to not wanting to see themselves as having more status than other members (even though the badge itself is an earned perk). That said, I'm willing to listen.

Thank you all for your valuable responses and contributions so far. I truly appreciate the time and effort you've taken to share your thoughts. To ensure we move forward with a well-rounded perspective, I’ll wait for the remaining team members to provide their input as well. Looking forward to everyone's participation so we can proceed collaboratively and effectively.

You can "ignore style" for any user or disable them entirely under preferences.

If the proposal is not voted on, this means that the idea will not be accepted, but if it is voted for, it means it has been approved in principle?

I’m not sure I understand the proposal? We can already make any custom title we want, isn’t that like the same thing but infinitely more customizable?

I agree there. Plus the novelty wears off and the system we have is good enough as is.

I was gonna say this too. I feel there’s a lot of overlap with what we can do already.
I presume this is some lack of awareness, since level 2s can’t access certain settings.

Why Doesn’t a Game Translator or Modder Deserve an Official Title?

With all due respect, I’d like to raise a point that I believe is important to many contributors in the community: why are members who invest real time and effort into translating games or modifying them not recognized with a visible and official title?

We often see titles like "Moderator", "Admin", or "Writer Guild" used to represent roles within the forum. These are valuable roles, of course—but so are the roles of those who translate full game scripts, hack ROMs, restore or enhance original content, fix bugs, and localize games for new audiences. These tasks require technical skill, creativity, and often months of work.

So I ask sincerely—why not give them clear, honorable titles like "Translator", "Modder", "ROM Hacker", "Fan Localizer", etc.? These titles would not only show appreciation, but also help new members identify who has experience in certain areas. It makes the forum stronger and more organized when contributors are properly labeled and appreciated.

Now, if the argument is that there is a feature where users can set their own custom title—I kindly say: apply it fairly. If you’re suggesting I just give myself a title, why don’t admins or team members set the example first? And if that feature is limited or not visible to all members, then it’s not truly a solution.

This kind of feature—recognizing contributors by their actual role—is standard in most professional or enthusiast forums. It shows respect, helps with collaboration, and builds a sense of community. Titles are more than cosmetic; they reflect the member’s contribution and help newcomers understand who’s who.

I hope this suggestion will be taken into consideration. Many of us aren’t looking for rewards—we simply want fair recognition for the roles we play in keeping these games alive, translated, and improved for new generations.

But this isn’t really a modding/translation community. The vast majority of us aren’t making romhacks, we’re playing them.

Several of them are. Look at Yousef or Waffles. They both have custom titles already. I’m not a mod and I set one too. You can just edit your Dragon Slayer title to make it say whatever you want, modder/translator included.

If that’s the case, then why not apply it to yourself too?

If it’s true that we can all freely edit our titles, and you believe that’s a good thing, then why not lead by example? You clearly understand how much effort goes into translating games, modifying ROMs, fixing bugs, restoring lost content, and localizing games for new audiences. These aren’t just hobbies—they’re skilled contributions that take time, dedication, and passion.

So why not set your title to reflect that? Something like ROM Hacker, Fan Translator, or Modder would not only showcase what you do—it would also help others in the community recognize your experience and feel encouraged to contribute as well.

By doing so, you’d show that these roles matter just as much as Moderator, Admin, or Writer Guild. It sends a message that technical and creative contributors are equally valuable. Otherwise, saying “you can edit your title if you want” without doing it yourself gives the impression that those roles aren’t worth officially representing. It feels more like an excuse than real support.

Recognition isn't about ego—it’s about visibility and fairness. Newcomers often look at titles to understand who’s active, skilled, or approachable for help. Titles that reflect real contributions build trust, improve collaboration, and strengthen the community.

So again, I ask with respect: if we really believe that contributors like modders and translators deserve acknowledgment, then why not wear those titles with pride and lead the way?

If you're being sarcastic, there really is no need for that (for the record, I work in video games, I know full well how labour-intensive it can be). If you're sincere, I apologize, but that part of the text looked like sarcasm. I just didn't fully understand what it is you're asking, since we already have something to that effect, only infinitely more modular. I took me until now to realize that you're talking about the badges, not the title.

So why not set your title to reflect that? Something like ROM Hacker, Fan Translator, or Modder would not only showcase what you do—it would also help others in the community recognize your experience and feel encouraged to contribute as well.
Because I'm neither of those.

This isn't a community centered around making romhacks, or translations or what have you, that would be something like the Romhacking.net forum (which also do not seem have these kinds of titles you're referring to, just ordinary stuff like Hero Member or Junior Member), so all I'm saying is that I don't think there's been much interest in what you're asking for, as there are already systems in place to offer a similar experience, but arguably even better. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, there have been several community efforts already, like the creation of the RGT-tan mascot, or Glimbo's reactions and animations, or the favicon by me, but RGT is much more centered around talking about games, not making them.

This part of you initial post is what perplexed me,
It could be a cool way to reflect our individuality and add a bit more personality to member profiles.
because that's exactly what the custom titles and all the style options to customize our profiles already allows, as there are literally an infinite amount of ways to reflect our individuality and add personality to our member profiles. Much more so than any predetermined ones, which you seem to suggest.

This part,
Maybe ranks could be based on post count, engagement, or community voting.
is also already true, because post count increases your level, which unlock more style options. If you donate (which one does of their own free will), you get the teeny tiny reward of unlocking all style options immediately, which is a fine "reward" because it's just cosmetic.
If you feel like you want to change your title to something that better reflects what you do, all you have to do is reach Level 3 on your account (or donate, but that's entirely up to any individual user).

I assure you, I am completely serious—there is absolutely no sarcasm in what I said.

With all due respect, I brought up this issue because I truly care about this community and the many talented individuals who contribute to it. Whether it’s translating entire game scripts, hacking ROMs, fixing bugs, improving localizations, or restoring cut or broken content—these contributors invest weeks or months of work, often voluntarily and without much recognition.

I understand the forum already has flexible systems like modular badges, and I appreciate the effort behind that. However, from a practical, user-facing perspective, titles are far more visible and impactful. They appear directly under usernames, accompany users throughout the forum, and help others immediately recognize their roles and experience.

This is not just about appearances—it’s about encouraging transparency, building trust, and giving credit where it’s due. When users see titles like “Fan Translator” or “ROM Hacker,” they know whom to approach for questions, collaboration, or guidance. It helps provide structure and clarity to the community.

I deeply respect the work the admin team does, and I know managing a forum is not an easy task. That’s precisely why I am raising this—not to criticize, but to offer a constructive suggestion that could strengthen the community and improve how contributions are highlighted.

I sincerely hope the entire admin team takes this issue seriously and does not ignore it. This is not just a casual suggestion—it reflects a genuine concern shared by many contributors who often remain silent or accept the lack of recognition. We need more than just discussions among regular members; leadership should acknowledge, discuss, and respond.

Please understand: my intentions are not selfish. I am not seeking personal gain or special status. This is about fairness, visibility, and appreciation for everyone who works hard behind the scenes. Recognizing contributors with simple but meaningful titles costs nothing, requires minimal effort from admins, and sends a strong message of respect and inclusiveness.

I also know that this forum is not solely focused on ROM hacking or translation, but we do have a dedicated section named “ROMhack/Translations Release.” So, in the end, implementing such titles would cost nothing and bring nothing but goodwill. I believe all members would accept and appreciate this positive step.

The admin team has nothing to lose by implementing such a system—but the community has everything to gain.

Thank you again for your time and for considering this perspective. I hope it leads to positive change for all.

So instead of fat old man, I'll change it to Rom Hack Enjoyer. Can we be friends now?

Edit: I have changed my title to reflect these new guidelines
I hope now I get the respect I deserve
