The Japanese exclusive vertical scrolling shoot 'em up, "Fray: Shugyou Hen" (フレイ ~修行編~), has finally been translated into English!

A spinoff entry of Micro Cabin's own "Xak" series (which I'm largely unfamiliar with besides this game), you take control of the titular character Fray who is training to become the best mage she can possibly be.... by shooting the hell out of everything in sight across seven action-packed stages.

Gameplay is pretty standard. You got a button to jump, a button to shoot (which can also be held down for a more powerful attack that costs some blue orbs) and the "Start" button brings up a screen where you can cycle through your special attacks.

Grab the patch here.

It should be noted that the Game Gear game is effectively a prequel to the Fray In Magical Adventure (Fray CD). That one has had a translation of the MSX2 original for a while, so it's nice to see the connections put together.

The MSX2 must be easy to hack for, so many old English patches for it. This ones from 2006. It's probably worst than the PC98 version like a lot of games though, and most ports like this to the PC Engine can almost be considered a remake with how much is added, altered and redrawn.

Not quite. Magical Adventure was a really odd duck with development. The MSX2 was the original, but it also ended up getting a version exclusive to the Turbo-R, which was a good bit better than the original version (voice sampling was included, for one notable example).

The PC-98 version was likewise an odd duck, designed for one of the earlier models of it (9801VM, 1985) to make it compatible with the preceding 88 via one of its last models in the 88VA. Design and graphics-wise, it's very similar to the Turbo-R one, and also includes the voice sampling.

Basement Brothers does a pretty good, albeit brief, comparison between them late in this video.
I'll post some screenshot differences from the video, for those that don't care to watch.

ah I see. The Computer versions always get a little messy when you try and sort through them all. So many different hardware revisions to consider.

Always good when us Westerners can get our hands on some forgotten treasure from the land of the Rising Sun. One day, I hope every game can be in English so I can play them... *sigh*

Huh? Learn Japanese? Man, that's dumb. Learn a whole new language to play a video game? Who do I look like? Slowbeef?

Yeah, what knucklehead would dedicate years of their life to learning another language just so they can play a video game?😂

(Now, if you'll excuse me, I must continue learning Japanese so that I can... uh... play obscure JRPGs that have yet to be translated.)

Bottom portrait looks lowkey terrifying and I don’t know why
