It's a malevolent spirit lurks in the shadows of forests and the darkest mountains of the Philippines. Capable of adopting physical form, the most terrifying of which being a massive half-human, half-horse hybrid, the Filipino Tikbálang thrives on chaos.

Basically a Trickster Bojack Horseman. ::winkfelix

Not exactly local to me, but from my country: my favorite cryptid, Mothman

I remember playing an indie narrative game based on this guy lol it was peak actually... I'll see if I still can find the link!

Edit: there we goooooo!

This one is called "El hombre caiman" (Alligator Man) is a man that made a deal with a wizard to get a potion to turn into an alligator to watch the women washing themselves on the river, the potion was so good it scared the friend he asked to apply the antidote causing it to drop it and only letting him partially turn back into human.

I know of the Snallygaster, Thunderbirds, Grafton Monster, Pope Lick Monster, The Loveland Frogman, Skinwalkers, Wendigos, the one called Shunka Warak'in or Carries off Dogs, the Van Meter Visitor, Kelpies and so forth.

My mom once offhandedly mentioned "The Jackalope" and for like 5 years I just never questioned its existence since it never came back up, lol.
I don't think it does anything, it's just a rabbit with some antlers or something.

I live in an area where bigfoot, wendigos, jackalopes, and thunderbirds are supposed to exist.

More specific to my state, the Flathead Lake Monster is supposed to be like an American version of Nessie.

The Tommyknockers are a Welsh/Cornish cryptid called knockers which haunt mines. When Welsh and Cornish miners immigrated and became miners in the U.S., their mythology came with them.

The Natliskeliguten is a different giant hairy biped who is supposed to eat people.

The Shunka Warak'in is an oversized wolf from Native American legend that hunts dogs.

The Wampus Cat doesn't seem to have a consistent description. In some versions, it has an extending limb that allows it to snatch prey from far away. In others, it's like a panther with six legs.

Yellowstone is supposed to have a dragon living in or sleeping under it.

El chupacabras. The goatsucker. Some weird reptilian creature that would suck the blood of goats, dogs and other farm animals. Farmers used to swear by its existence but no proof of a creature like it was ever found. The sightings were at their height during the late 90s and it died down quickly.

La llorona: The Crying woman: At night you can hear wailing sounds on the wind while traveling by a bridge on the countryside of Puerto Rico. Some people believe it is because the bridge is haunted by the ghost of a woman who was killed tragically. It has become a local myth.

A Kapre is a large, hairy, tree-dwelling giant from Philippine folklore, known for smoking cigars, its strong odor, and playing tricks on people, often leading travelers astray in forests, but can also be protective; they're spotted by cigar smoke, glowing embers, or a feeling of being watched from large trees like balete.
This picture shows what a Kapre looks like:
Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: A tall (7-9 ft), dark, muscular, hairy humanoid, resembling a mix of human and ape, sometimes with a beard and loincloth (bahag).
  • Habitat: Lives in large, ancient trees, especially balete (banyan) trees, and is considered a nature spirit.
  • Habits: Constantly smokes a large cigar or pipe, which can be smelled, and its glowing embers are sometimes seen.
  • Nature: Generally a playful trickster that can make people lose their way, but can also be protective or even dangerous if angered, especially towards women.
Signs of a Kapre
  • Smell of tobacco: A strong cigar smell in the jungle or near trees.
  • Glowing embers: The light from its smoking embers high in the branches.
  • Fireflies: A cluster of fireflies may indicate its presence.
  • Feeling watched: A sense of being observed by a large, unseen being.
This video explains how to identify if a Kapre is nearby:
Cultural Significance
  • Represents ancient animistic beliefs and the mysteries of nature.
  • Can be a guardian spirit, but also a mischievous entity that disorients travelers.
  • The term "Kapre" may derive from the Spanish word for "Caffer" (Ethiopian), reflecting colonial influences on folklore

I'll bet this thread will look like Megami Tensei wiki after it's all over...
