I can't be the only one who prefers keyboard only tank controls in classic FPS. Never even occurred to me to touch the mouse in wolfenstein, it fits like a glove, it's made for keyboard. Verticality in doom feels totally out of place and annoying. Even duke nukem 3d I played with pageup/down for the longest time (the flying enemies were the bane of my existence) until some gta in some internet cafe taught me how to mouselook and I eventually realized that I can make duke at home do the same with some elbow grease.

I also PREFER keyboard only controls for devil may cry 3 and resident evil 4 (and chaos legion but nobody cares about that).

I use vim.

I always play anything on a keyboard on PC, there's very few games i cannot play on keyboard
fighting games, depends which one of course, i can play street fighter just fine as long as i got shortcuts (lp+mp+hp for example) i cannot play vega on keyboard it ain't happening,
but king of fighters has dumb long inputs of half circles and look up geese raging storm it's like DB, forward to back, DF, etc.
SOME racing games, let me explain, rush 2049, cruisin, arcadey games like NFS, just fine on keyboard
but try playing gran turismo or forza or any realistic racing game on keyboard, i mean you CAN, but anytime you need to steer slowly is out the window.

i honestly thought like the new ports of duke nukem and doom feel weird looking up and down, most time you auto shoot up/down why look?
the remaster of star wars dark forces got me stuck before i realized "nope you cannot just LOOK DOWN at a switch to press it, you gotta crouch" and said well why do i need to look up down then!?
but also i played way too many games on consoles that use right stick to look and it's a force of habit now.
i love auto camera rotations and reset camera buttons a LOT, i hate touching right stick if i really don't need to.

Love the Doom controls, so simple and fun to play (even on the SNES), still love the strafe and quick running speed
dude doom GIF

SOME racing games
yah, I pretty much stuck to the simpler ones, but even for those yearned for analog control. Then again I never actually got good enough in any racing game to actually make proper use of it, so I maintain my flatness, and wonder about alternative keyboard control schemes that can perhaps replace analogs.

When I get filthy rich and retire I'm going to commission an RTS with keyboard only controls.

i mean technically you can play RTS by keyboard, windows has mousekeys to control the mouse by keyboard, i use it daily when i'm lazy to reach my mouse or just wanna click/hold by keyboard
i did it for settlers 2, and warcraft 2 on windows 98 when i had no mouse at the time

also, starcraft was on N64, just to say it can be done without a mouse
warcraft was on PS1, as well as command and conquer a few games on ps1
RTS can be done easily on keyboard if they can be done on those consoles.

respect, you are a true keyboard warrior, my commission will include mousekeys in memory of your feats, but we must achieve perfection, you must be able to beat a mouser 1v1 with the keyboard!

alternative keyboard control schemes
tried out this random taxi game and it kind of has the speed controls the way I always wanted (not exactly, but effectively) and made me realize I want the same for steering. basically up and down control the speed directly, instead of enabling disabling throttle, up increases speed, down decreases and not pressing anything keeps it stable (cruise control i guess xD). similarly for the steering, left will move left, and stay there, right move right from where it was, and there can be a separate button to center it. add some modifiers keys to make all of this either slower (ctrl) or faster (shift) and we're all set, much buttons, many fun... now somebody make this for me :geek:

I've always been a keyboard onlyist when it comes to games like DOOM, Hexen, Heretic, etc. At first it was because I ran those games on DOSBox and setting up the mouse flew over my head as an 8 year old, but then it just became because it's how I've always played it and I never really felt like changing.

Kinda hard to circle strafe properly with just a keyboard in vanilla doom.
