Flare (Free Libre Action Roleplaying Engine) is a simple game engine built to handle a very specific kind of game: single-player 2D action RPGs. Flare is not a re-implementation of an existing game or engine. It is a tribute to and exploration of the action RPG genre, and its gameplay can be likened to the games in the Diablo series.

While the core engine is written in C++ with SDL2, there is an easy to use modding interface. Using the modding interface, it’s possible to create entirely new games.

Flare comes bundled with a game made by the Flare team, the Empyrean Campaign. The Empyrean Campaign's story begins with the player being exiled from their homeland of Empyrean, resulting in them embarking on a quest to regain entry. This journey takes the player through many regions, with plenty of side quests along the way.

Unfortunately, there is currently no multiplayer. Much of the Flare engine would need to be re-worked to support such a feature, so do not expect it any time in the near future.

Official Release Trailer:

This is a really nice game engine tool for creating Diablo-like games. You're also free to use fully custom graphics to make the game look unique but have that classic Diablo/Roguelike feel. The included campaign is very enjoyable and pretty deep. I honestly found myself enjoying it more than I did Diablo II.

Included in the downloads is the current version which now has fully remastered graphics for playing in full 1080/1440p resolution and an additional new procedurally generated side dungeon called the Iron Labyrinth. It also has tweaked some spells and other things (check the source for a full changelog)

I've also included the previous version which was the last one to use the original graphics. It's known to work well with Windows XP if you wanna try this on your beloved older PC. It's lacking the Iron Labyrinth but otherwise is the full length campaign.

To play the game simple run flare.exe

Screenshots 1 to 11 is of the remastered v1.15 graphics and 12 to 20 is of the older v1.0 to 1.14 graphics.

This was also fully ported to PS Vita. It works great on it too and when I played it years ago it never had any glitches or issues. I might see about uploading the PS Vita version, but I think @Juiceala would be better suited to uploading that one than me. I'm not sure how to handle the files that would need to be uploaded for that version.
Definitely interested in the Vita version! Didn't know about that. I know that there's a Linux version as well, but not sure how we can properly support Linux games on this site. It's downloadable from various repositories for whatever distro you might be on anyway.

Oh i see, from that msg it seemed the same msg that windows displays. I downloaded and tested the file with 7zip and Winrar and i confirm the file is corrupted. My mistake. Sorry for that.
Fuuuuuuck! I thought I had this perfect. I hate waking up the next day and learning my post isn't working due to the file becoming corrupt during the repo upload process. (And people not reporting it soon enough after I submit it) This happened for a few other posts before too. Something about the repo uploader tool occasionally messing up the data of archive files and making them not be able to extract. I asked Alma to test the files through the server download link to see if it worked before I submitted the post, but she never got back to me about it so I just submitted it anyway

edit: while I work on replacing the file in this post you guys can download the zip version of this from the source page. It's basically the same files I had attempted to upload but in a zip instead of 7z (being in 7z wasn't what corrupted it, it was the uploader tool of the repo that did)

The files have been fixed. Now they're just the same as the portable zip version from the source instead of me rezipping it to 7z. It helps with compatibility I guess. Just make sure to extract it to it's own separate folder so the files don't extract in a messy way since they didn't contain the files in a folder first in the zip.

1 - You didnt use 7zip or Winrar to extract the files. NEVER use the extractor from Windows for this.

2 - Why extract those files in a place like the users folder? Choose somewhere else. And dont or bettter, NEVER install the game In folders created by windows.

This game also has a PortMaster version for many Anbernic devices and similar Android/Linux ARM-based retro consoles.

Oh, a multilingual PC game. That’s not something you see every day.
Thanks for uploading it.

have i done something wrong?

Unreleased Mod: Empyrian Mega-Loot Mod - I made this 6 or 7 years ago but never released it. What you do is:

1) download the zip file and extract it to your flare mods folder. Whatever OS you use, it will have a folder.
2) Click on configuration, then click on mods. Click the mod on the left side. Underneath that, click enable.
Thats it!

This mod increases frequency of drops for all monsters in all 16 levels, including drops for regular, blue, and purple loot. When you reach the next waypoint, your inventory will be full. You may have to start getting creative with keeping the better loot. Happy testing everyone! You can disable it anytime by select it on the right side and clicking disable underneath it. This will not change or overwrite any original game files. Let me know if this mod works for you and if you like it.

If anyone installs this for Android and realizes that the touch controls have disappeared it's ok. Just go into the configuration and click the defaults button and click ok. Once you reset it you'll have to change things however you want but you'll have the touch controls back. I don't know why this works but it does work.

Thats true. I remember there are at least a couple of other ones you can run besides empyrean campaign.
I remember liking the engine and wanting to mess with it when it was complete. time to put my money where my mouth is i guess lol.

This is actually a game engine if i recall and the campaign is a way to show it off.

I love this game I think it starts out at a harder curve than Diablo. Thank you! The monsters do get a lot tougher but at least there are waypoints. There is less loot drops than in Diablo but that can be changed. The source files of the game are all in text so it's easy to make mods for flare. This also works in windows Linux and Android as well as other devices I think. I've been playing flare for a long time.

Beaten this campaign some time ago. I'm generally not into Diablo style games, but this is short enough to keep me going.
Worth playing if you like the genre.
