When the AVGN released his episode on Tiger Electronic games a few years back, the detail that stuck with me the most was that their GameCon console could be hooked up to a modem and access the internet (text only). That surprised me because I remember being able to do just that with my first cellphones through WAP, but that was much later in life (and still not that great).

Still, I did some shenanigans with phones and experimented a bit with both the PS2 and the Dreamcast, accomplishing little more than murdering my parents' phone bill in the process. it was mind-blowing.

What was the first console (or devise) that you took online? And what did you do with it?

I wanna say the first gaming device I seriously took and used online was my original model 3DS (even tho I mainly just watched videos on the eShop, lol). As far as the first gaming device I EVER hooked up to the Internet, though, it would for sure be my old Wii.

PS3 was the first console I took online, I think my motivation was a glitch in one of my games that had apparently been patched.
From then on it became sort of mandatory to recieve updates and patches. This is part of the reason I shifted to retro gaming and don't play anything beyond the sixth generation (these days).

I dabbled in some online games and DLC, but I never enjoyed the experience. Most of the online play in those days was shooters, and I've never had much love for the genre. I was quite proud to be left in the dust by those trends.

The sole exception was the Xbox Game Pass, which exposed me to a lot of games I'd never have chosen for myself. For a while that was the best subscription I'd ever paid for.

The dreamcast. I had to wait till nighttime when everyone was asleep so the wall telephone was unused and i could take it off the wall and plug in the long ass cable I bought form Radio Shack from the kitchen jack all the way to my room and into my beloved Dreamcast. To be honest the internet sucked ass back then, especially on the DC. Imaging trying to fap to a jpg that takes 15 minutes to load. ::frog

I got ps2 and ds and psp and 3ds and Vita.
If you mean "linked it to a wi-fi" I think it's 3ds, for the eshop and some spotpass (nice times, when with Nintendo you didn't need a subscription to enjoy extra features in-game).

If you mean "multiplayer", I think Vita (my first multi experience has been with "Ragnarok Odyssey Ace").

A very old, very shitty PC, at least by today's standards....
I honestly can't even remember the brand of the old thing

i kept using SO many america online free trial CDs, i never actually paid for it
later on i had netzero (was free dial up internet with a time limit, you just login again after the time limit)
this was about 1998 just guessing as i was using win98 at the time,
the first online game i played was Ragnarok online the original first game. on a private server though with much boosted exp rates and modifications, but i still had fun with it.
used the internet on my dreamcast, but i had no online games (i WISH i had phantasy star online back then it's so good) i just dreamcast browser to download stuff for sonic adventure 1 and 2, and download time trial ghosts for Rush2049.

Gods... I don't know the number of those things I tossed in the trash over the years.

By the time the AOL discs started showing up, I already had good internet service that I paid for, so they were kind of useless. My brother used them as drink coasters sometimes.... we got so many of them.

In fact, we had so many that my brother used to save them up and use them for target practice from time to time.

The dreamcast. Didn't even have a PC at the time, but got internet service for it. Got cable internet a year or so later with a pc.

Twisted Metal Black on PS2, it was a pain in the ass to setup back then.

Call me stupid, but it makes me genuinely happy that many of you took the Dreamcast online haha.

Yeah, it is very cool. I did use my Dreamcast online for a while, but as I stated, it wasn't my first online device

First device that got me online was my PC back in 96~97. And the first game I ever played online was good old quake 2! that was a learning experience.

The first console that got me online was the Dreamcast and Phantasy Star Online. Didn't play that much due to physical limitations (phone line and all that) but I did use it.

Oh, my very first rst DEVISE was a Pentium II running Windows 98, but my very first console going online was still the DC.

Since I already have you all here, let me ask: was hooking up those consoles to a landline the suicidal idea it was here because of insane costs or were you all in the realm of sanity?

My computer, a dogshit pre-built Windows XP machine my grandma bought off a shopping channel entirely because she saw them promoting it and decided to order it.

If you're talking my first games console I went online with, it was my Nintendo DS Lite. I did have a PS2 before that but we still had dial-up when I got it so I couldn't go online with it (of course I did still try because I got my PS2 when I was 10 years old in 2006 and legitimately didn't know what 'Ethernet' was and thought the port on the back that looked like the phone jack I use to go online was for dial-up but it never worked)

The Xbox 360. And it felt like a nuisance from the start. I knew back then that they were trying to nickel and dime me with the Xbox Live Gold membership...

Ahole Archnine wouldnt let me go online.
