A fully fledged original adventure utilizing FE8 as a base.

Credits: Sokaballa
Version: 1.0.1
Date: 22nd of April, 2025

Fire Emblem: Illuminated is a FE8 romhack that has been in development for over 6 years. The game spans 44 chapters and nearly everything about the game is custom, including story, maps, characters, weapons, music, and much, much more. Follow Jay as he travels around the war-ravaged continent of Ralspar searching for both his place and purpose in the world… While also running from his fate!

Overview:

  • A brand new story (with a serious tone) set in a new continent, Ralspar. Everything in this story is entirely custom!
  • 31 Mainline Gameplay Chapters, 5 Shop Chapters, 6 Interludes, 1 “War” Chapter, and 1 Unique “Gaiden” Chapter for a total of 44 chapters. Each chapter is entirely custom!
  • New maps for each chapter that increase in complexity throughout the hack. Varied objectives in each chapter that also increase in complexity!
  • Higher difficulty than Sacred Stones. There are three difficulties, however, and the player is able to swap between the difficulty levels at the beginning of each chapter by holding the Select button while the chapter title is playing.
  • Plenty of custom classes, weapons, weapon icons, battle animations, and much, much more!
  • The Skill stat is actually relevant! Each point of skill adds 4 to Hit and weapons have been adjusted for this change. It is now exciting when units level their skill stat!
  • The Luck stat has been made more relevant as well! Every point of Luck now adds 1 point of Crit while attacking and 2 Points of Crit Avoid while defending.
  • Custom UI for pretty much every menu!
  • More unique/effective weapons to increase weapon diversity. Increased number of magical tomes for each magic type.
  • A lot of custom music from famous games including Mega Man, Final Fantasy, SNES classics, and more!
  • Quality of life hacks (Showing HP Bar, Show health to be healed, fast text and unit movement as a default).
  • Circles Skill System. Each character in the game comes with several skills that can swing the tide of battle. There are several new skills and most skills have been altered numerically in one way or another from vanilla FE8 skillsystems. Note that enemy units will never get proc skills and that skills are balanced heavily across characters and classes.
  • Most every chapter has some form of making you work efficiently and most chapters are finished within 15 turns. It is fairly guaranteed that if the player spends too long in a chapter, they could end up paying for it!
  • This hack is designed to have a small roster and nearly every chapter has full deployment. There are only 16 characters that are recruit-able in the normal version of the hack. Because of the small roster, every character is valuable to the player and must be taken care of. It’s also why no unit can promote until after Level 15.
  • A casual/classic split that is actually divided into three modes. There are the typical casual and classic modes, but in between is a mode called Casual Punish. In this mode, units who fall return the next chapter with a 25% Max HP reduction that is permanent. This is a way of making the game a bit more iron man friendly, given the point above.
  • Plenty of secrets along the game!
  • There is a fully fleshed out NG+ that is available after the game is completed the first time. This mode will allow you some features that change the base Illuminated experience a great deal and offer replay-ability.
  • Timed Hits are in Illuminated! With this system, pressing the A button just before an outgoing attack lands will deal bonus damage. Just as well, pressing the A button just before being struck by an incoming attack will negate some damage. This system is NOT necessary to interact with in order to complete the game and is entirely supplemental. Illuminated was already balanced around not having this feature, so this is just a very fun and new way to interact with the game. Bonus/Reduced damage cannot happen with battle animations set to off either, so if you do not feel like using it, don’t bother!
  • An in-game guide detailing the changes from the vanilla FE8 experience.

It's only 16 MB's though. If it's causing problems with mapping also, it's not like it would break the servers to have one of the older versions that weren't causing these issues added underneath.
That's fair enough. I'll check the extent of the issues when I can and re-up the previous version.

The question isn't stability, it's save compatibility. Server space needs to be used intelligently and we can't maintain versioning histories for games.

Why not have the older version links also? If they are more stable, it would make sense.

Okay I took a look at the FEU topic and it seems updates do break saves on occasion. What I would suggest is making a copy of your current save, rename it to the current version and test.

Hopefully it works!
Again, thank you very much RageBurner, I will make a backup in case the file transfer doesn't work.

If I can't transfer the save files, I will have to finish the game in its version 1.0.1, fortunately there was no crash in my game until now.

Sorry for the inconvenience, I have a question, I was playing the first version that was uploaded to the site (the V1.0.1), but I notice that this version is V1.0.3, is it possible to transfer my save file to the latest version?

PD: Thanks for the upload
I'm not sure but I'll check for you.

Hm well, then migrate to mGBA I guess. I don't like it, though.
fast forward goes faster on mgba on my rg34xx. 200 fps compared to 90 on other devices.

Hello there,

would be possible to add two Fire Emblem GBA hacks, which are remakes of the first 2 games:
  1. Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon (FE 1 Remake: Shadow Dragon Remaster)
  2. Fire Emblem Sacred Echoes (FE 2 Remake: Shadows of Valentia Demake)
Is the shadow dragon remake any good?

I'll just live with it. I've lived with worse.

I talked to the dev in the main thread and told him what I experienced.

...You wanna know the funniest thing?

This hack was built for VBA original. He has no idea why this all was happening.

Even worse? The things that normally DO crash the game never once caused a crash for me.

This is just what happens in my life. Nothing ever makes any goddamn sense. ::datadance

I don't think I had any of these happen to me before.

Edit: there might be conflicts with the default hotkey mapping.

I don't see how. The only keybind I have changed is adding screenshot to F12, because it isn't bound by default. Everything else was mapping controller buttons. Or rather, fighting with it for an hour until it randomly decided to stop deleting my binds for the A button for no reason.

It happens completely at random. Just suddenly out of nowhere, without warning, it starts ignoring Shift. This time I had to restart the entire emulator to fix it.

Objects have been thrown while dealing with this fffffFFFFFF--software. ::koishigun

Well, I understand your stance, but I still recommend you try a recent VBA-M nightly (it runs recent pokémon hacks flawlessly, something base VBA can't do.

Do any of them fix the thing where it doesn't disable the Windows F10 function of opening the Alt menu? Which disables the entire keyboard until I use the mouse to cancel it?

Or where sometimes pressing Shift-Function to save a state loads it instead? Like, it just ignores that I'm pressing Shift until I manually save using the Alt menu? Cause lemme tell ya, it always puts me in a fan-fucking-tastic mood when that happens. ::frog

That might be a number of limitations of the hack itself.
Also, just saying Visual Boy Advance is not enough information. If using VBA, you need to use a recent build of VBA-M to have a good experience.

I've never had a problem with any other ROM, though. And if I'm being completely frank, my experience with the new VBA-M so far has been worse, by...pretty much every metric. Which checks out, since most modern software is functionally worse than it was twenty years ago.

Yes, I am a cynical jaded bastard, and I am only mildly sorry.

The VBA version I was using is dated 2005, now that I look at it. Sure, maybe I shouldn't have expected it to be completely compatible, but it's still frustrating.

You might be right about the limitations in regards to the poison effect triggering when it shouldn't, since I killed him with the timed hits mechanic, and the killing blow sound doesn't play when that happens either. Could also explain why the timed hit mechanic straight-up doesn't work with any dark magic spell except Void. Might have something to do with the sheer length of the animation.

But Siphon is literally just a renamed Nosferatu, and Savior worked in the other hack I've played that featured it. Requiem or Vision Quest, can't remember which. Maybe both. Gave up on Requiem, because Chapter 3 is bullshit, so I don't remember much.

...Both of them ran flawlessly on the 2005 VBA, though.::cirnoshrug

Chapter 9. I hate Chapter 9. The game gives you 15 turns with the objective of reaching 2 forts. Well, after you reach both forts, suddenly you have a new objective, to talk to somebody in the middle of the map. This would be fine, since the Status screen says ahead of time that you have to visit 2 forts and talk to somebody, if it weren't for two things: first, the game does not give you any additional turns to do this, and second, the game does not tell you that only your two Lords can talk to the guy. So... yay, time to restart the chapter.

The game does actually tell you this. The text is even highlighted. Maybe you skipped it or something. There is a lot of text there, so I wouldn't blame you for missing it.

My Lords ended up on the opposite side of the wyvern they're supposed to talk to, so they were already in the middle from trying to fix that, and to recruit Gerry (my absolute LAD).

But everything was already dead by turn 9. Possibly because I was overleveled, since I managed to kill every uber-enemy I was supposed to run from. Including the general in the center of that map, and the hero on the other side of the wall.

I'm kind of a big deal. ::smug

Which emulator was it?

VisualBoyAdvance. Now I have to manually name every screenshot I take, too. Never had to do that before.

Also just learned that the Siphon spell doesn't work on the enemy's turn. Shows the health recovering, doesn't stay there. You'll never guess how I found that out!

The Savior perk doesn't work, either. It's supposed to negate penalties for rescuing. It doesn't.

EDIT: Toxic sword just poisoned me even though I killed them before they hit me. Hoo boy, even without the emulator trouble, this hack is a mess...

Had to import the save into a new emulator because the game would freak out and freeze every time I attacked anything with Sam on a forest tile. 100% consistent. Never had any other problem with this emulator in my life.

Then I had to spend an hour trying to get the new emulator to stop erasing my keybind for the A button. After fighting with it for an hour, it suddenly decides to work properly. No reason, it just chose to work after my blood pressure got high enough.

Importing a save state works. The actual in-game save has stopped working completely. I can complete the game this way, but I will not be able to do New Game+, because the game replaces No Data with No Data. The .sav file saves with 0 bytes of data. I have tried for two hours to get the in-game save to work. Nothing fixes it. Currently on Chapter 8.

So glad that new software always works so well. Now all it needs is the obligatory memory leak and it will be up to modern standards.
