Final Fantasy Thread

I keep forgetting that OVA existed, had no idea it took place after FFV! Super neat, rly gotta get to watching it sometime c:
Yeah! It's like.... 500 years after FFV? I think? It's some huuuuuge time jump, and given how kinda absurd it is, it's hard to really align it back as being part of one of the mainline games hahaha, but I love the terrible pink chocobo design from it, and it's just so goofy
i found the ova on the internet archive, along with a big ass collection of final fantasy stuff over there.
it has books, magazines, games, artbooks and more.

yeah, i looked it up on wikipedia, and the ova takes place about 100 years after the game ends.
the internet archive has the whole set of ovas and much more over there as well.
Yeesssss!! I did a deep dive to find art for the art book I made, but I was ecstatic about how nice the version of it on the internet archive is, considering it was only ever vhs, and also so old.

I wonder if I'll be able/motivated to beat all these remaining games. 💀 (yes, I put both main versions of Tactics since I know WotL has some difference that even the recent remaster hasn't included)

I thought to include also FFVII Ever Crisis but since it's live service game and once servers are gone the game will stop existing...

I would like to play Cristal Chronicles in co-op on emulator. Anybody tried that?
Is it a decent ARPG?
i think that one is one of the harder ones to do in co-op in dolphin. i haven't checked on it in a while, so maybe there has been some improvements in the past few years.
it's decent enough, from what i remember. you'll definetly get more enjoyment out of it in co-op. i'd say look around for any guides on setting it up for co-op and see what would go into setting it up.

Yeah, thanks. I’ve found some post on reddit that a user had success with it. That requires to configure mGBA virtual controller, as I understood, which seems to be already supported by dolphin.
Also seen a YT video with gameplay featuring those mGBA screens displayed aside to main screen picture. Not sure if it looks like that in reality, but overall impressive.
Just wanted to check it out here if people did anything similar.

It's definitely one of the best GameCube games, don't worry about it. Good luck to manage to play the proper full experience on Dolphin (alongside Four Sword Adventures).

Playing Final Fantasy XV again as I found this thread. Playing OG VII and the remake as well cause I've never been able to continuously play a Final Fantasy game for some reason. I know a lot of people don't like XV and I think there were ways it could've been handled better and tighter but I believe it has a sound core and structure and I still love it.

i loved the main party and their chemistry througout the game, their relationship with each other carried the game's story

I agree. They nailed the friend group chemistry and loyalty. Even when the story felt like it lost pace, the group was always fun and interesting and they were really flexible with light and heavy scenes without feeling out of place.

Final Fantasy XV was a mess of a game. There was some good and there was a lot of bad. What is truly amazing is how they kept making that mess bigger and bigger and bigger with constant content updates. Just adding more and more stupid, pointless bullshit onto a game that already had too much bullshit. Stupid, dumb crossovers. A multiplayer mode no one wanted. More and more stupid hunts and quests. Annoying timed exclusive bullshit. Bizarre new gameplay mechanics. A virtual reality fishing game.

One of the most glaring examples of a company trying to do the "games as a service" thing. The constant additions just furthered the perception that the game was never complete in the first place.

For all the complaints people had about FF XIII (even though I personally liked it), it absolutely pales in comparison to the mess that was FF XV which easily stole FF XIII's title as worst in the franchise.

Yeah, the game needed so much but what it didn't need was a Cup Noodles hat and an Assassin's Creed festival.

While I started with IV and went back to play I, I think the last Final Fantasy game I played was X (tried XI on a private server but gave up very quickly).

Honestly, after Sakaguchi and Uematsu stopped working on the games I lost interest. I'm not really a fan of the direction Nomura and Kitase have taken the franchise and frankly put think both Square and Enix went downhill after the merger (kinda nuts how hard Front Mission and the Mana series died after that).

I guess I'm just old now.

Idk, Visions of Mana was pretty neat. And the Trials of Mana remake was very fun!

Also I really want to get into XI but PlayOnline makes sure I won't.

So I’ve tried to run FSA in latest stable Dolphin and at first glance these virtual mGBA controls work well and you can overlay their small displays anywhere on the screen making them always on top with no window frame, which looks quite pretty.

Dolphin itself is a bit bloated with so many tweaks and I was confused where actually to put bios files, surprisingly there is no path settings. Reddit to the rescue.

Overall, seems the games are playable, will wait for the chance to gather players.

Visions and the Trials remake (or even just the official translation) was good. Just not much between those and Legend though. Not bad just kinda mediocre overall.

And yeah. PlayOnline is a weird archaic clusterfuck. I'm surprised it hasn't been replaced by this point. Makes the whole thing not even really worth trying to get into.

I bought XVI on Steam sale, willing to keep an open mind and judge it on its own merit and whatever, but after an hour of compiling shaders the game crashed and every time I tried a fix it would still take a couple of minutes to recompile the shaders first. Before inevitably crashing. Refunded it

Looking back, I appreciate the political themes in FF7 and Tactics. Tactics, especially, with its scathing critique of religion and the themes about class warfare.
Still looking for ones that do that today. Dragon Age was a close contender and Lair had some stuff left on the cutting room floor after Sony told them to censor it.

Play XII at this point, you never had. Also other classics like IV and VI if you never did for those as well, but that's because the SNES era has a huge place in my heart.
