Looks like theres a new Final Fantasy coming out October 22.

And its a turn-based jrpg (HD-2D) instead of an action rpg!!!
Thank God! I'm tired of FF being an action rpg series and I wanted them to go back to their roots.
I really hope this game is what I've been looking for. I have, for the most part, really liked SquareEnix's recent HD-2D games, so I am cautiously optimistic here.

What do you think?

On one hand, it's nice that E33 proved to Squenix that there's still (and always have been) a market for turn-based RPGs.

On the other hand, I saw somewhere that this "appears to be a standalone version of their mobile gacha game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius." If this is the case, then it will just be a really pretty turd..

Fingers crossed..

From IGN's website it says:
It's an adaptation of the story from the first season of the now-shuttered mobile game Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, but also incorporates elements from other updates and unique story content. It's not a port or a remake, but the Brave Exvius story was used as the foundation. It has an new turn-based combat system that uses a traditional turn order and not the ATB system from other older Final Fantasy games. It has a new overworld, chocobos, airships, and many of the touchstones that you'd recognize from the series. Resonance uses the Brave Exvius soundtrack along with 33 new songs made for this game.
So either way its an actual new turn-based RPG at least

A Final Fantasy in Octopath Traveler's clothing. I'm not complaining at all. Looking forward to it.

There will be an enhanced version of this game called Final Fantasy Resonance Refrain
damn it i spit my coffee, not expecting a shining resonance reference.

you know what really drives me nuts, mobile games have pretty good storylines, but then it gets ruined by gacha and money crap and infinite grinding, etc.
brave exivus story was cool but jesus i spent more time clearning my Unit inventory than actually playing
actually was worse on FF Mobius, i spent 90% of the time clearing my inventory!!

another eden has a REALLY good storyline too bad its stuck in a shitty mobile game, which btw takes somewhere near 4-5 minutes to start up everything i launch it, really fast wifi and a galaxy s25 phone should NOT be taking that long for any damn game.

Tales of crestoria storyline was VERY interesting, they shut the game down SO fast it was ridiculous!
game deserved to be an actual Tales game, surprised they didn't just remake it into a console game!
wasted storyline...

dragon quest smash grow, again story is good but the game already annoys me with how much you have to grind, absolutely more than any DQ game i've ever played.

forgot persona 5 x , i got so much into it but then the mobile game crap comes in...
should've been a console game without the mobile crap.

More Classic style FF is always good but once again it's a spin-off than a mainline entry because Squenix are too afraid to go back to turn based for their main series.

Idk anything about Brave Exvius, but perhaps will buy eventually.
Hopefully the "fans" don't shut up though. They're right after all.
Brave Exvius was the kind of game I play for an hour solely to see how many versions of Terra, Tifa, and Lightning I can summon I mean solely to see how much I can play before I got bored

The sprites were nice to look at, makes the Pixel Remasters look disappointing in comparison

I'm actually looking forward to it but let's be honest, this is just another Octopath Traveler game.

Final Fantasy used to be the one setting the standards, now the franchise is happy to just follow someone else's.

I enjoyed what I’ve played of Brave Exvius before it shut down. Having a standalone version with upgraded graphics and lack of mobile game fluff sounds perfect for me.

The soundtrack is also really well made for a mobile game, which is pretty typical for Square Enix I think.

There was also Dragon Quest setting the standard for how JRPGs would be like back then but I'm not surprised that FF is now following someone else because they understood classic FF better than FF itself.

Oh wow, they look practically the same!
Its the whole "HD-2D" thing. They also used it for Dragon Quest 1&2 HD, Dragon Quest III HD, and Triangle Strategy. I honestly like it.

I don't mind the HD-2D look but it think it's starting to be overused at this point and the games end up looking kind of samey. I'm also not really a big fan of the way lighting tends to to be done in those games. It almost reminds me of the days when lens flares were everywhere constantly. What would be cool to see is a modern take on the style that was used on the ps1 a lot. Sprites on top of 3d backgrounds. I think a game like that could look really good with modern graphics.

...Resonance looks kind of bad IMO. I don't tend to like it when the FF Series tries to make a crossover title and take it seriously (All the other FF Protags showing up just makes me cringe). And they are trying to bash 6+ Artstyles into one game and it looks like a visual mess.

Still gonna try it because I'm an FF Super fan with no self control. But I heard about Resonance and was elated, then I watched the trailer and was immediately let down.

There are a lot of games from the era that still look better than modern games. Valkyrie Profile comes to mind as a major one that still holds up. I'd love to see some new games in that style.

I’m kinda interested, I haven’t really clicked with the Team Asano games yet, but there’s other things going on that look cool.

I hope it’s got more external or internal mechanics than standard turn based, I kind of hate when you can look at a battle and know almost exactly how it’s going to play out, I’d still play that too though.

True; Square Enix and by extension Final Fantasy have long since forgotten what it means to lead the industry.

I don't like the HD-2D visual style personally. The only game I've played in that vein was LiveALive since I had wanted to play that game for years.

I don't perticularu want for a FF game that has some kind of fanservicey placement of old characters either. I like when FF is doing something different. If it gets good reviews, and sells well, I might consider it, but then I'd feel like I should finally play those Octopath games first.

Looks neat and im willing to buy it, but i feel Square should bite the bullet and make a Turn-Based RPG for the mainline console series again. KH already covers the Action RPG side of the company anyway so they got that market covered.

I really can't believe people still think this.

Because Mistwalker is still active, Octopath series is still going, Bravely Default is still going. There's plenty of traditional JRPG from Square and it's alum. Wanting the mainline games to stay predictable is so simple minded. Why would you not want experimentation like games such as 11-16. Each one is infinitely more interesting than something that you've already experienced.

It's such an anti-art opinion to have, plus like I said you have so many options. You're literally posting this in a thread about a new 2D turn based Final Fantasy game.. Like come on.
