FF1-and-2-Dawn-Of-Souls-usa-gba-coverart.jpg

A rebalancing hack that seeks to restore some of the difficulty and feel present in the NES original version of Final Fantasy 1 by reintroducing spell charges and limiting the level cap to 50, as well as introducing tweaks to spells, equipment and other gameplay elements.

Author(s): Maeson
Type: Difficulty, Gameplay
Version: 1.3c
Date: 17th of January, 2024
Status: Fully Playable
Source: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/6244/

RB's Notes 1: Check the "Extra Patches" subfolder for patches you can apply to the ROM to further customize the game to your tastes; they should be self explanatory but do check the included documentation when in doubt.

RB's Notes 2: The ROM has two QoL patches already embedded: Improved Equipment Viewing, by Rabite and Unrunnable Batttle Notification, by Kea.

I do like how the romhack makes you actually have to use utility and status spells in order to get through the game. Similar in vain to SMT in that regard.
That's true, and generally they go unused because they don't work nearly as well or as often as they should, vanilla.

It restores the Challenge that characterizes it in the base version of Famicom/NES, but also reintroduces and adds some elements in the gameplay system as shown in the description, but this Romhack will be more focused on the more experienced players of the original FF.

man, the only thing holding the GBA back was its sound. even that wasn't awful, just not ideal.
Yeah, honestly hacks should always target the euro ROMs because those have audio improvement and color improvement patches, commonly. Given the original release date, though, it's probably unlikely Maeson will do this.

Thank you for including those extra patches <3

I have only played the original and "origins" on psx. a little worried about the soundtrack but it's appreciated as always...

man I wish ff2 was fun to play. great to see unique ff1 mods for ports like this

You know, FF2 here (and subsequent iterations) can actually be quite good to play because they fixed the glaring bug on the growth system that plagued the NES original.

It takes a bit longer to get going in FF2 you could say, but the amount of control you have over how you tailor characters is outstanding (and not silly broken like it is in vanilla FF6).
