So, I recently became interested in FF7. I tried out the original PS1 version via DuckStation. Despite it being my first JRPG, I was really hooked and interested. However, I soon found out that the game has a remake, and from what I've heard, it is much better than the original. People suggested that it is better to play the original first and then go for the remake, but I don't want to spoil the game for myself by playing the original first if it is not as good as the remake. So, I wanted to know your opinion: which is better? Should I go with the original first or the remake?

I'm not gonna spoil anything, but the remake somewhat expects you to have played the original because it's not exactly the same story. It's also not "finished" yet, as only two out of three parts are out.

As for which is better it's of course totally subjective but I personally prefer the original in every way, except for maybe Barret being cooler in the remake.

the "remake" is more or less a lie. it's an alternate universe version of the original game. you need to play the psx game, watch the movie, play the ps2 game, play the psp game and possibly read a japanese only book in order to be ready for the remake/sequel abomination that square enix only made because they needed money. that's not a joke or anything like that; they did legitimately say that they would only make it if they were desperate for cash.
just play crisis core [the psp game] and the original psx installment. then go and play 4,5,6,8,9,10,12, and paper mario. those games will be infinitely better than the fake remake of ff7.

If you enjoy the original FFVII stick with it, as it'll only get better and better. And whenever you next feel like playing another Final Fantasy game I'd strongly recommend X. I truly believe it's one of the best games ever released, even if it isn't crowned the "best FF" game as often as VII, VI, or IX

Original.

Why?: Remake made for people already played the original so they just wanna enjoy fan service. So the game is expanded for this idea.

For example, in the remake let's "enjoy" finding tons of cats in "the particular place" just for fun to progress with main mission yo because they changed the game so much I cannot recognze it, and exactly for "not to recognize" the game they added lots of BS in it.

So instead of actually playing the game you spend lots of unnecessary time in a game that has FF7 theme, like "enjoying" half an hour trivial cutscene with a trivial character that you wouldn't wanna have that conversation in real life because you bet you would do anything not to have that conversation but here it's, wanna forget about real life but nope, they wanna remind and enforce what you don't want in real life lol.

They wanted to make the game have "better graphics" but wanted to sell the game as 3 parts so they did anything to stretch the game unnecessarily. They just filled the game with unnecessary BS a lot for it to fill the parts to seperate the sells.

So my dude original is the actual game, and remake is more like weird filler episode like watching a One Piece weird filler episode series about same events but plays out differently with BS lol.

This but instead of a weird filler episode, it's an awkward alternate-universe take on the events of the original story that keeps most bad things from happening like the original game, and does it solely out of fanservice.

It also introduces all sorts of unnecessary characters just for the sake of including something new and different to fit the games new non-turn-based format.

not the remake............ try the shinra archaeology cut on pc! its a full retranslation of the og :)

I would say original no matter what game is being discussed, but ESPECIALLY FF7 where so much is rewritten in the remake that it's not the same story.

i found a good video on ff7. i think it spoils the first part's ending, so watch at your own risk.

Mhm. Remake is not playable to "play the game" but it's just for "I cannot get enough of the original and I'm so die hard fan I wanna enjoy me fan service so I would play anything about FF7!!!" rubbish. No wonder I hear even fans of the original really dislike the remake. Well I only played the 1st part but I heard 2nd part is the worst lol.

Honestly, First time should be the psx original or it's port. Mostly cause it is fully complete, but also remake is not a true true remake.

Yeah. Even Resident Evil 3 Remake is a better remake than FF7 Remake lol.

Original

FF7 Remake is not exactly a full remake; It's more like a alternate reality and it's not giving you the full experience because the third part is still not released and lots of rewritten stuff have tons of issues

so 100% go for the PSX version on the Duckstation or the pc port with mods

Original game is better.

A bold statement in a forum dedicated to retro games. You ready to fight?
Well if it was about Crisis Core I would say "dude ignore the original, remake is better" but sadly it ain't the case for FF7 Remake lol. Me can give up with retro if new version is better. Me never stuck in nostalgia yes yes lol.

I got to know about FFVII thanks to all the noise the remake made, and a youtuber who was so happy about his loved ps1 game getting a remake, even getting emotional and all. That emotion made me watch the entire gameplay (I don't have the hardware for playing it) and I loved it. Then I learned all the history of the FFVII franchise and went for the original, I loved it even more.
If I could go back, I'd definitely start with the original first, the core story is there and complete, then you can jump to other places.

If I had played the remake first I would think how bad the original would be lol. Remake obviously have bad design choices throughout the whole game and I knew the remake would be so bad just because this happened to me from the start lol:

There are emulators that run on cell phones, you can use Duckstation or Matsu Player multi-emulator to run the .cue file and start playing PS1 games. If you don't have a smartphone, there are plenty of good emulator options on PC.

If, as you say, you already tried the original and got sucked into it (meaning it's not too horribly outdated and clunky for you) then by all means, go with it. I enjoyed my time with the remake but mostly BECAUSE I had played the original and had such a connection to it. If I take a step back and think about it on its own merits, I don't think I would have liked it as much as a first FFVII experience.
But I would suggest going for the PC based retranslation available on this here website in the PSX mod section. The original translation was not the best.
