I am thinking of playing FFVI. I have heard that the gba version is the best compared to the PS1 version, but I still wanted to hear from you guys.

GBA version has terrible soundfont, script is more faithful to Japanese release, and graphics look a little too bright. On the other hand there's extra content compared to other versions like 2 bonus dungeons and some bosses.
Meanwhile PS1 version has terrible load times and some bugs (from what I've heard).
SNES version imo is the superior one as it has none of these issues aside from having different english script, but I think any port will provide great experience

Yeah, I'd just go with the SNES version instead of the GBA or PSX ones. Just better performance overall. I can't speak on the Pixel Remaster version that came out more recently, but I'd definitely stay away from the mobile version.

I guess I have to go for the SNES too, the GBA version has extra content which kinda makes me want play it. But I'm only going for the story so the SNES is fine. I never really heard about mobile one, what's so bad about it?

Best way to play FFVI is the GBA version with the Color and Sound Restoration patches applied, trust me. I'm probably going to get flamed to hell for this, but nostalgia aside the US localization completely butchered the script. If you care even a little bit about the story, please don't play the SNES version. The best thing would be if someone modded the GBA dialogues into the SNES version, should be completely possible AFAIK. Pretty weird nobody did it yet. I may try doing it myself after I get more programming experience, it'll take quite a long while though so don't count on me lol. Even with the patches applied though the GBA version's sound still isn't up there with the SNES version, and you're also losing quite a bit of viewing space in the GBA version because it's cropped to fit the GBA aspect ratio. At least though the dialogues are an actual translation, and not a typical 90s US butcherization localization, so it's completely worth it imho. It's unacceptable that such a gem of a game still doesn't have a decent way of playing it in English after more than 30 years.

So you telling me to play the GBA version? But both color and music Restoration patches are different.

Pixel remaster fucked up the colours.

Yeah. They're two separate patches, the color patch changes the game's color scheme back to the darker SNES version and the sound patch replaces the FFVI Advance soundtrack with the OG SNES version.

SNES is the best version. Hands down. PS1 has loading times before fights and the GBA/Pixel Remaster includes censorship.

Oh yeah, the censorship stuff, I forgot about it. I found this patch for the GBA version if OP chooses to play the GBA version, although I haven't tried it. I still swear by the patched-to-hell GBA version lol

Honestly, the purest form of FFVI is the Super Famicom version with a translation patch. The SNES version includes some censorship itself when compared to the Super Famicom version, like edited sprites, removal of religious references and bar/alcohol references. I don't have an opinion about which translation patch is best, but I'm sure one can research that.

Wait, it exists?

I didn't know that. Makes sense considering it was the 90s and the west wasn't used to this kind of games, and there was still the belief around that video games were for kids and it's inappropriate and yada yada. Honestly, I believe it's quite an accomplishment in itself that we even got the game lol. Even if in such a censored and weirdly translated state, I'm just glad it got translated considering it was the 90s lol

What type of censorship are we talking about? If it's a spoiler then don't tell me.

Well, there are a couple of options, looking at the repo.

There's the RPGone translation, but that one is a bit older.

And there's the Ted Woosley uncensored version that combines the official Ted Woosley translation with some of the ideas of the fan translations.

Well, the GBA and Pixel Remaster versions censored a scene where Celes is imprisoned and is getting punched by a guard. Its nothing deserving of censorship, but there was some political movement in Japan against depictions of violence against women in media, so the ratings board wouldn't allow the scene anymore in games aimed at all audiences.

Wow pretty cool, I'll check them out, thanks!

What about the revised old style edition? I just found it.

@Austerplay don't listen to @Strategist he is wrong as usual ::biggrin :loldog (no offense) play the GBA version fot the extra content, here is the rom already patched with the sound and framerate fix + removed censorship.

an here is the color restortation patch in romhacking.net, you can apply it in the site himself, on top of the sound patched rom.

lol, of course if you patch the GBA version to not suck it doesn't suck. Who would've thunk it? ::thinking

The GBA version has character portraits during dialogues, which may not seem too important, but for me does a lot regarding being immersed in the story.
