FF6 on the GBA is the best version, also has the most extra content.
ugh but that horrible visual and sound quality... i avoided a lot of GBA ports for that reason.
i'd rather play on Mobile (the one before pixel remaster) it also has all the extra content of GBA
they just delisted it everywhere when pixel remaster came out... annoying.
also on PC though, you'd have to get it by "other means"
on a side note none of the extras felt that great really

Personally, the only GBA ports I feel are worth playing are FFV and Dawn of Souls. FFV just because the bonus dungeon is actually decent and the bonus jobs are kind of fun. Also, there's a patch that fixes the audio if you play it on an emulator. I also think Dawn of Souls has a better version of FF1 than the PR version. Switching to an mp system killed a lot of the difficulty but it still somehow works out feeling like more of a challenge than the PR version.

I never really liked the art style in the PSP/Mobile ports. They remind me too much of some cheap janky rpg maker game or mobile gacha shit or like applying one of those smoothing and rounding filters in an emulator.

PSP final fantasy 1 has ALL the gba content, looks so much better, and sounds better.
the PSP also uses the MP system like GBA
PSP also has ONE more extra dungeon with the end boss having 8 different forms.
idk what janky filtering you mean, they redid all the sprites on PSP port and it looks great to me.
no rounding smoothing or janky anything that i can see...

the FF5 port on gba was my least favorite way to play my favorite FF game...
idk, i never used the extra jobs even after unlocking them, i already beat the main game and all extra bosses before using them at all.
the android port of FF5 2014 (not pixel remaster) has all the gba content also
but thats prob with the mobile jank filtering you're talking about and i mean... it's not terrible to me but i can see how it doesn't look good too honestly.

Hi,
I am in a similar situation as OP.
I started reverse gameplay arc for myself going through FF 9 to 7 and now stand here asking myself what a good first timer version to play would be for the 6th
I did some light reading and found these the most interesting including:

Rose (Revised old Style edition) by SilentEnigma
Having the script edited to include cut script stuff and the bugfixes seems neat, idk if they touch upon core mechanics (Vanilla + better translation + bugfix?)

Ted Woolsey Uncensored
Has a newer version than Rose ATM.
And from skimming the readme seems
to build partly on Rose' SilentEnigma's work and decensor things that got lost and keep Woolseyisms (idk what those are) with a lot of care to stay faithful so also no core mechanics changed (Vanilla + SilentEnigma work + script expansion + uncensored things like alcohol and other mature themes ?)

Hope Eternal and Love Everlasting Heale
Seems to be a script expansion with changed difficulty and changed mechanics and touch up of the graphics in years of work.
Idk if I like difficulty hacks I always fear they are a waste of lifetime because you grind longer and longer to overcome instead of playing the game. I want to give it the benefit of a doubt though because it seems to try to be fair. (Difficulty up + Core change + Script expanded + graphics touched up ?)

And after reading Mr RageBurner's words I want to think also about A Soldier's Contingency
ASC
Which does a lot with everything
More Monsties, Text, Overhauls, Grind begone and and and
( Overhaul + sane type ?)

Note
I am making a very unfair overview here because I am interested in a smooth first timer. Experience that improves upon the original. That is how I played 9 to 7 so far.

Any Input would be nice.
I usually like QoL a lot and time saving functions. Graphical updates are rather secondary now ( they were very present for 9 to 7 via PC modding ). I seem them as a bonus but not necessary. Consistency and ease are my jam. I hope for answers and cool thoughts.

Cheers

Ted Woolsey Uncensored
I ended up picking that one in the end mostly because it was compatible with the MSU-1 patch and Final Fantasy VI's music is worth having in high quality. I did actually enjoy what I played of FFVI Reimagined though. But the equipment system kind of reminded me of FFIX so I started playing that instead because it's another one I haven't played for over 20 years but I actually like FFIX. I honestly forgot how good it was. I'm starting to remember why it was my favourite of the playstation Final Fantasies and why I was disappointed when FFX came out. I'm just playing the regular Playstation version but it looks really nice upscaled on Duckstation. Better than the mobile port I tried first. The FMVs were janky and choppy on the mobile version and the graphics were basically on par with the upscaled playstation version.

Hello again,

After taking the time to read in the forum and comments of the hacks I learned more from the opinions and thoughts there, to my surprise I found Mr RageBurner there, too. And with the input of his and others + me playing the intro ( 2 to 3 hrs )of my 4 candidates, I think the best first play and replay might be indeed HeaLe (Hope eternal and Love everlasting) & ASC A Soldier's Contingency with your flavour of choice + patches u like.

Hope from Piggy Chan! is very lovingly crafted I dare say and is a very good Vanilla++ experience, which is what I wanted, I realised, because I never played it before so I wanna see and explore her ( ? ) work as a love letter to the game.

And Soldier's Contingency by Lightning Hunter seems more of a we make the game what it should have been if Square Enix wasn't working their people to crumbs. Also with love and script expansion on their agenda like most interesting hacks.
I was intrigued by its Overhaul and story adaption but ultimately chose to pick ASC for my second play through in a year or so because so far FF6 and 9 are the most interesting and have a value for me.

That being said Rose and Ted Woolsey Uncensored are also very valid and I recommend them as a Vanilla+ (1 plus) experience for people who want it even more pure and faithful.

Thanks to all the people from the comment sections of CDR/RGT, RageBurner and Graw for the Input. I found my version, too.

Cheers

I like the GBA script port version. If I feel like playing that game, it will be this version. Best script, bug fixes, etc.

I have fully completed the SNES, PR, T-Edition, and GBA versions of the game, and of those the original SNES version comes out cleanly ahead for me.

Pixel Remaster has a lot of very _strange_ oddities I don’t understand, which is already an odd thing to call out on any version of FF6, but there was a point when all of the enemies were already dead, THEN Gau used Quake and killed my party? It just doesn’t feel right, at all.

T-Edition is not well designed, and I have walls of text I sent my buddy complaining while playing it. There are some good ideas, but a lot of later enemies ignore status immunity — especially death immunity — which was very uncommon in the original, I think maybe only Tradeoff from the samurais in Kefka’s tower ignored it? Between that nonsense and nearly every enemy in the game have counterattacks, the whole hack was just a unenjoyable slog with an occasional dash of DPS race during every boss and was utterly unenjoyable.

The GBA version is fine, but where T-Edition offers at least a few really good event additions, all of the GBA additions are half-baked and don’t really add anything worthwhile to the game. I generally view it as an inferior port of the SNES title.

It is weird how much people seem to miss the added content from the GBA versions back when the Pixel Remasters came out. They are indeed very missable.
