It's raining like crazy outside irl for me rn, always makes me feel super comfy. Got me thinking about rain and its place in games, any personal favourites stick out to anyone? For me my all time favourite rain would definitely be the cozy ass Minecraft rain, they really nailed that sound design between being outside and inside. I also love the rain in Rock Village from Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, but i chalk that one up to heavy nostalgia.

Very different take on rain, but there's this segment of The Last of Us 2 where you're in the middle of a giant storm, with intense rain and giant waves battering the place you're sneaking into at the time - incredibly immersive and atmospheric.
Given the story context and what happens during that bit, I thought the way they used the weather in that segment was just *chef's kiss*. Horrifying, but *chef's kiss*.
Things spiral out of control at that point, with the storm reflecting everything falling apart.

Thinking about it, I'm kind of shocked that neither Thief nor Dishonored ever had a really good, spooky rainswept infiltration mission - or at least not one I can remember - seems like a perfect fit for an immersive sim to me. Atmosphere-wise, I mean.

I guess not really a favourite thing, just a fun story;
Years ago when I had an absolute dumpster of a PC, my Minecraft would lag when it would rain. We had to have weather effects off permanently on our server with my friends because of this.
Truly sad stuff.

There's quite a lot, especially for games that knows how and when to use it. For example

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Batman Arkham Knight

Monster Hunter (I picked the old world because it felt more atmospheric than just raining)

During the saddest moment in Lost Odyssey, the image and music fades and for a moment you can only hear a heavy rain sound on the rooftop, awesome sound design😢

I second Final Fantasy Tactics. The tutorial fight is stormy, setting the mood well, as is the fight where you can gain Agrias as a permanent party member (unless she gets killed off thereafter). Getting into random encounters when A Chapel plays in the rain was gorgeous the first time. Still is.

Video should start at 3:00 to get a gist of what I mean for the tutorial fight.

I've always really loved the rain effects in Metroid Prime. The way it lands with little droplets on your visor was one of the coolest graphical effects I'd seen at the time it came out.
I really wanted to like Rain World but I just found the gameplay loop to be so tedious. The world and environment are super cool though and the game itself has a neat concept I just wasn't a fan of actually playing the game.

I’d say Heavy Rain. It did live up to the title.

Probably any farm simulation gets the best response from me, no need to water crops it's a fishing day! I usually don't associate much positive feelings with rain in gaming. I'm not sure because of my stance on rain in my real life usually just an annoyance or maybe it's just not noticeable as I've never seen it other than a foot note since it never effects gameplay in my games other than farming sims.

The rain and music in this scene in Yakuza 4 is absolute kino
Yakuza has a knack for utilizing rain to enhance the atmosphere - there's also that one spoilerific scene in the rain from og Yakuza 2 where this song plays, loved that contrast:

(Still can't believe they replaced the music for that bit in Kiwami 2)

Yeah man these games are all atmospheric as hell honestly, basically no other game has quite nailed the urban vibe for me

Seeing the Dremmur castle in the background while being followed by a biped snake, finding the music box in the statue and solving the mystery
and getting trolled by the annoying dog for the treasure
was the most atmospheric storytelling the game has to offer

In Hollow Knight as soon as i met the statue of the Hollow Kinght in the City of Tears, already a great level (I LOVE night rain) is where i knew i must beat the game, legitimally on the verge of unistalling due to sheer frustration

Everything during chapter 1 of Mother 3 that happens in the rain near the end, you are a broken man that recently was told his wife was brutally murdered by the same species they were playing so casually in the begginig of the game, you are as broken as your sons, that not only saw their mother die, but also your meltdown, going postal in your own neighbours, the chapter reaches its climax while rain starts and you are decided, Hinawa will be avenged

This because it was so dumb to hear in every battle in a certain area, and it became somewhat of a meme on my stream for a bit.
