this got brought up in another thread. i'll use a similar answer here as i did there. How old is something before it’s not modern anymore? Because my answer is GTA V (2013)
I’m not too bothered over the usage of retro itself because I do think there can be a middle where something isn’t new enough to be modern or old enough to be vintage, my question was about the former so the definition of vintage itself would be somewhat irrelevant to my inquiries.this got brought up in another thread. i'll use a similar answer here as i did there.
retro would be if the game is no longer purchasable from 1st party retailers or digital storefronts. if you can't get it at walmart, target, gamestop or your local drug store, and the digital store has been shut down; then the console and it's games are officially retired and discontinued; they have now entered the beginning of being "retro".
yeah, usually the next to last generation of consoles falls into that category. they still get units and games made. it's usually about 2 gens away when it would be finally considered retro. the online connectivity has greatly increased the life span of consoles made after 2000. they were still making ps2s up to 2018 i think it was; long after the ps3 came out.I’m not too bothered over the usage of retro itself because I do think there can be a middle where something isn’t new enough to be modern or old enough to be vintage, my question was about the former so the definition of vintage itself would be somewhat irrelevant to my inquiries.
Doesn’t help that my other answer would be dark souls 1, a 2011 game.
it drives my ass into a wall square did not have final fantasy mode available from the start. the combat is so much fun when you are made to engage with it fully, and experiment. the default highest difficulty when you begin the game, normal, is so easy it makes the entire game feel braindead."Journalist" difficulty setting.
difficulty modes should be available from the start. not everyone is going to play a game multiple times. star fox has an expert mode to unlock but you need to get a medal on every planet to unlock it. i think i would have had my fill of the game long before i got to that point. i used to play it a lot when i was younger, now only once in a while these days.it drives my ass into a wall square did not have final fantasy mode available from the start. the combat is so much fun when you are made to engage with it fully, and experiment. the default highest difficulty when you begin the game, normal, is so easy it makes the entire game feel braindead.
yeah, that reminds me of metal gear solid 1, 4 and peace walker with the button mashing sections. i definitely felt as worn out as snake did after those parts. definitely pulled me in more to the game and the main protag.i agree completely. game design has intercourse with narratives more than the average game player thinks, i think. the already gritty and violent story of ffxvi would be so sensually punctuated by gameplay that truly pushes the player hard. when every fight feels like a struggle, you relate to the protagonist's own struggles so much more in the cruel world he exists in

he probably saw 2b and decided right then and there that the game wouldn't peak past that point. no point in playing when you have seen the best part at the start.
I'd be inclined to agree but there's certain scenarios/modes you'd prefer the player to avoid until they have a complete understanding and practice of the game. My friend started RE2R and I told him not to do the highest difficulty and he said "lmao im a pro gamer xd" and he was stuck in the gas station at the beginning for 5 hours.difficulty modes should be available from the start.
yeah, there are plenty of good examples of having repeat playthrough unlocking the harder difficulties. especially if you get some crazy good bonuses to use on the next playthrough.I'd be inclined to agree but there's certain scenarios/modes you'd prefer the player to avoid until they have a complete understanding and practice of the game. Well, I guess 5 minutes is more than enough to choke the chicken.he probably saw 2b and decided right then and there that the game wouldn't peak past that point. no point in playing when you have seen the best part at the start.
I have no idea, he got past it and then died on his way to the police station, then he resets. Then tries again, dies by a silly mistake, then gets to the police station and does not save because "I'll run out of saves" and then dies, and repeated the process until he was satisfied and I think he has played the game thinking the game's system will kill him instead of the monsters.yeah, there are plenty of good examples of having repeat playthrough unlocking the harder difficulties. especially if you get some crazy good bonuses to use on the next playthrough.
how did your friend get stuck for 5 hours. i get stuck in games but i can usually get around it in a shorter time than that.
didn't only 1 or 2 games in the series have limited saves?I have no idea, he got past it and then died on his way to the police station, then he resets. The remakes for 2 and 3 have limited saves on hardcore mode If I'm not mistaken. But ultimately, this is why having some difficulty options available from the start could be detrimental, but it's a very isolated case so overall it should be okay to have them unlocked. Maybe just a warning to dumbasses that think they can handle it on their first time loldidn't only 1 or 2 games in the series have limited saves?
i think by the fifth death i would look up a guide to see what i'm doing wrong.
some games do that like fire emblem, but maybe that's the reason why some games lock the difficulties behind beating the game. so that you know what you are doing on later runs. The remakes for 2 and 3 have limited saves on hardcore mode If I'm not mistaken.
