Favorite video essays?

The Mystery of the Druids by Mandalore gaming is one of the funniest hours I've spent watching a man breakdown a completely insane adventure game of dubious quality. Its a game ostensibly about a man investigating a druid themed murder case, but it's does all the normal adventure game stuff to normal people who all rightfully treat him like a crazy psycho who can't be trusted.
I loved this video! Found it after his Cabela's videos and its amazing.

I’ll admit, these days I’m mostly in it for the yuks. But the video essay is still a valid format, I think. It’s just a matter of remembering Sturgeon’s Law, and finding people who actually have something to say. Or are very funny.

I'm sick of almost all video essays, most of them have this deep/intellectual pretentious way of presenting things that many times are subjective or outright don't make sense.
But if there is one i enjoy it's the ones on this channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Mystic_Ode
And this one which is one of my favorite videos of all time, about my favorite band of all time
Holy shit! I'd never seen this video before! This is awesome. I'm 99% sure the reason the video is not reaching a million views yet is because it does not have voice over. Most people can only digest the entirety of a long video essay while they're doing something else, but when the video requires you to read, that become impossible.

You should watch Caddicarus. His video essays are really funny.

I think besides SteakBentley, Nerrel is probably my favorite.

I also really like Running Shine but he's a bit harder to recommend to people since his humor is more on the /v/ side of things. Yiik Vids an all timer tho::megadancebaby

I watched this two months ago and immediately thought off it when I read the title. I agree with everything said in this video and already did so before I knew off it. Which is why it was kinda eerie. Especially when he pulled up Fuel, when I was just playing that game the day before.

I really enjoy Civvie 11, Matthewmatosis, Noah Caldwell-Gervais and Tim Rogers essays. I often disagree with them on particular points, but I recognise their writing chops and feel a kinship with their shared passion for video games.

I'm a person who loves video essays. I'll spend hours watching these deep dives into my favorite games in the Metal Gear franchise, but I also enjoy using them as an introduction to games I've never played before.

SteakBentley and AskYourUncle are my favorite creators, what are yours?

Feel free to link your particular favorite video.

most essays i have seen just ramble on and use big words or long sentences to deceive me into thinking the author of the essay has made a point, i think this is true for most "longform" analysis videos, i do not understand their popularity
You reminded me of alkor from diablo 2 when he says "ormus been speaking in riddles for years I think he does because he has nothing intelligent to say" applies to most video essays too :loldog

The rise of popularity of long form content looks like a thing caused by tiktok short form content , I could be wrong about it but it feels like people glorify long form content because "its long its must be of high quality"

Big fan of Ahoy too.
His videos are so qualitative that I cannot call them essays but more like documentaries.

I'll always remember this one

I kinda dislike how Uni/College (and even H.S. to a lesser extent) tries to force having like 500-700 words essays (or 5000 characters) so people will bloat them with "however" "perhaps" and other paraphrases instead of getting to the point and assuming that the more complex a word is the better it will sound even if in most of the cases they'll get misused so it would make 0 sense in the sentence.

It's the same syndrome with movies where people thought that we need moves as long as TLotR and Nolan to be systematically better...

The shorter sometimes the better best videos I find in YT are usually around 10-30 minutes mark gets to the point quick and gives you what you want straight away instead of going through the history of car manufacturing and explaining how all conflicts in the 90s would effect the game.

Also some essays are redoing the same ideas too.

No, we don't need another video telling that Majora's Mask is apparently a metaphor of the five stages of grief or that Link is actually dead and that Termina is purgatory or telling us again that Super Mario Bros in the west was a reskin of Doki Doki Panic, thank you.

I'm just gonna put this here. I do think this gem of a video needs to be watched at least once in a lifetime of a person. Especially because the topic, yes, can be broad, but it explores lots and lots of themes.

It also made me curious about brutalist architecture and the conceptual mega buildings.

I enjoy watching Izzzyzzz's stuff. She covers a wide range of stories and retrospectives about online spaces, args, and other misc weird internet things.

Majuular is pretty great, I love his Ultima videos

+1 on the Ultima retrospectives, the way he covers the history of the series is fantastic.

Here's the video essay I'm most proud of making myself
