Favorite Tokusatu

It's a hard pick but i'd say ressha sentai toqger, it's super good. I also really like kamen rider build, and ultraman cosmos. I should get back into watching though, but i am awfully unsure on what i should watch next. I watched most kamen rider seasons from the heisei era so my ideas are a little blank.

I'm genuinely surprised they never made a train themed ranger until ToQger.

PS: Is this me or Sentai series dropped the -ranger for -ger instead? Why series were called -man at some point up to Jetman (+ Gingaman)?

Japanese is a language that LOVES to contract and portmanteau words - so dropping the 'レン' in 'レンジャー' seems like an inevitability. And I'm assuming adding 'man' as a suffix was directly lifted from/alluding to the grandaddy of tokusatsu - Ultraman! Though this is a pretty common thing in western fiction too - batMAN, superMAN, spiderMAN, animalMAN - and similarly this has fallen out of vogue and is maybe seen as a little old fashioned. So my best guess that the same thing happened after the shōwa era.

Both the American and Japan versions of the Dinosaur Rangers, AKA Power Rangers. Timeforce was great as well. Also enjoyed the Hong Kong's version of the genre with Super Inframan.

I'm a bit sad because it's also a way to simplify a language even more (also TimeRanger will always sound better than "Timeger").

I know that GoGoV had a train but never a full train theme.

I do wish they brought back the GGV theme of real life heroes in Tokus again.

And yeah, it shows that it was the early to mid Showa era to have the Man title (I liked Changeman as well despite not having it in my country like Bioman to Jetman).

It's a bit has been like calling someone Captain something (Harlock, Future, Power) or Space stuff (Space Dandy already sound out of its era).

I always though eva was an horror themed anime desguised as a mecha anime.
It's a psychological and body horror series yeah.

But I'll be honest: I watched it too late and I prefer Gunbusters as for Gainax mecha animes and Paranoia Agents for psychological themed anime.

Oh yeah we haven't delve much into the American toku here huh. I usually prefer Sentai counterpart compared to the rangers except for Lightspeed Rescue, I adore both GogoV and Lightspeed Rescue, even to this day if someone would ask me what I wanna be when I grow up I'd always answer firefighter, thanks to Carter.

Dragon Knight was also pretty sweet, I like it almost as much as Ryuki.

Dragon Knight was surprisingly good, considering the Black adaptation before this was just bad.
My absolute favorite Toku from the west is hands down Big Bad Beetleborgs, never watched the original Juukou B-Fighter but I heard it's completely different.

And uhh does anyone here watched Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighter from Beverly Hills?

I used to hate Saban because of what he has done with Power Rangers but in retrospect without him maybe tokus would've still been very niche.

Also it's funny because I noticed how Tokus became more child-friendly whereas a PR season of the same series would have a darker tone (like Power Rangers RPM).

Speaking of foreign toku I would also post this great one made by people who truly loved Super Sentais and the genre

Are there nice Korean if not Chinese Tokus as well?

I need to check them

Power Rangers RPM
So, Power Rangers fans: Just to be clear, this is objectively the best one, right? I don't need to see any of the other ones? I always kind of hated Power Ranges because of the beyond-cheesy acting, but I've heard a ton of good things about this show in particular and it admittedly does peak some interest.

If I ever really want to watch a toku show, I'll watch the Japanese original, but I guess I could be suckered in to watching RPM if it actually is good to someone who doesn't already have affection for the franchise.

Honestly I could see myself watch Mighty Morphing just for that 90's cheese that have charm.

I mean if you are in a more relaxed mindset it could be fun.

Well go for Super Sentais then.

Tokusatsu didn't exist at all in my country, and my only experience with it as a kid was from a rom of "SD The Great Battle" (and even then I'm fairly certain I mained the Gundam character) but from browsing a little bit throughout the years I still think, as a super mega giga ultra casual observer that Kamen Rider is my favourite, at least from designs. I really like the bug look they've got going.

I'd like to get into it more but I'm not sure where to start. I don't mind old media either. Frankly, I tend to consume more old japanese shows than new anyways, so I'm open for most cool stuff.
Choose the license that fascinates you the most and start from the beginning in chronological order.

Nowadays, the Costumed superhero productions are nothing more than stinky meatballs due to excessive sanitization (even in today's Japan unfortunately), whereas the first post-war television broadcasts were rather wild in terms of drama.

The big flaw to swallow is that special effects were either nonexistent or have not aged well.

What happened btw? I have a feeling that laws passed in Japan.

Even animes in the 90's were less daring than 70's.

Kamen Rider, full stop

If that goes against the rules tell me

But I love old practical effects and grim (without being too edgy) settings.

PS: if it gets deleted let me at least show that one scene
