Seems like a lesson the modern game industry could use. They spend far too much time on trying to engineer the best graphics and most addictive mechanics and/or monetization strategies, when it is the story and characters that make a game truly memorable.

Yes, it can be applied to anything you want, besides what you've already said about video games, I would also add the main point, in other words the gameplay.

Today these political activists who have infected the industry, the respect, and the freedom of expression, they don't understand that it doesn't matter how loud or bad their shout may be, because if the game doesn't work and doesn't entertain the consumer, it will be considered trash and will fail, even if you've spent half a billion dollars on it, on the other hand, even the smallest Nintendo game will find its way, because even though I really hate their attitude towards emulation and amateur preservation, as a company they truly know how video games work.

Even Nintendo understands that a game isn't worth much without captivating characters. Even when they were making fun games they didn't quite hit it as large without Mario, Zelda or Pikachu.

And yeah, well a good story is universal and transcends races, cultures and political preferences. Many of the criticisms for these pollical activists can be narrowed down to them being lousy storytellers.

"No matter how true something is, it gets dramatized the moment you speak of it."
"So in this story, you should be constantly wary of what's true and what's not."
"The lesson for you here is not to expect anything dramatic in life."
-Kaiki Deishuu, Monogatari.

"That's the rationale of adults, isn't it? That we should just forget things that are inconvenient to remember. Adults are deceitful."
-Ruri Hoshino, Martian Successor Nadesico

"Monsters are tragic beings. They are born too tall, too strong, too heavy. They are not evil by choice. That is their tragedy. They do not attack people because they want to, but because of their size and strength, mankind has no other choice but to defend himself. After several stories such as this, people end up having a kind of affection for the monsters. They end up caring about them."
-Ishiro Honda

"Conscience? You dare to speak to me of conscience?! Only when you have felt the full gravity of choice, should you dare question my judgement! Your life span is a flicker, compared to the mass of doubt and regret that I had borne since Mortanius first turned me from the light! To know that the fate of the world hangs dependent on the advisedness of my every deed... can you even begin to concieve what action you would take in my position?!"

"It's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum and I'm all out of gum." - Duke Nukem
Found out recently that this was actually originally from the movie They Live (1988) and Duke Nukem popularized it. Though the quote is flipped in the original, "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and im all out of bubblegum."
