Movies Favorite J-Horror movie!

Whaaat? Never knew a Fatal Frame film existed. Good to know, might watch.
Also, what's the thing with tetsuo? I found some people call it a "Cyberpunk" movie, which interested me a lot firstly but i just couldn't watch it whole.
I fucking hated Tetsuo, great film but just know that if you’re squeamish with bugs or have Entomophobia to prepare beforehand.

It’s more Industrial horror imo but it can be considered Cyberpunk yeah.

With the scene in the hospital and the finale in the stadium? Absolutely!
OMG that stadium scene!
Other than that small part where that emblem on the back of that jacket leaves a trail, the stadium scene is all I can remember clearly.

I just read on some Wikipedia that people still debate about what that movie should be classified as.

I also vote for Tetsuo. I've seen plenty, but I can't think of another film that caused me the kind of dread that Tetsuo did.

Also if Gozu counts, it definitely deserves a mention in this thread too.

Man, Gozu was a fucking movie. I saw it a really long time ago and it really stuck with me, it's one hell of a surreal film. Great recommendation.

It's not a very deep pull, but Audition is a classic. I'm not surprised there's a few Takashi Miike movies mentioned, he's one hell of a director. I've seen a good chunk of his films and he knows his shit. Usually. Okay he's made a lot of stinkers, but he's still a great director.

From the sheer quantity he’s made, it’s impressive Miike generally has more good movies than bad ones. Another favorite of mine by him is Happiness of the Katakuris, though I’m not sure you can fully classify as horror.

Yeah, he's a movie making machine. His ability to make fucked up stuff as well as family friendly stuff is pretty impressive. I've wanted to see The Happiness of the Katakuris, but I haven't yet. It sounds like one hell of a movie. x) Ichi the Killer is the first of his films that I ever watched and while it's not a horror movie, it's certainly an experience. Not one for the squeamish. Fudoh: The New Generation was fun and gory too.

I've learned to avoid American remakes of foreign movies thanks to The Ring and the One Missed Call remake, those were as good as a giant pot of hot dog water.

Pulse has definitely been on my radar since I started getting into J-horror, I heard great things!
There was a rumor circulating in my area that ppl actually evacuated theaters in Japan during some viewing of The Ring? IDK, it's just what was said. I've seen the American version. I thought it was simply OK, and had (what I thought) were some catchy visual elements, but what I saw wasn't nearly scary enough to make me evacuate anything. I've heard that the Japanese version is better, so maybe that accounts for the difference. I've never seen the J version though.

Oh damn, i hate bugs, more than that, i'm horrified by bugs. Now i remember... The images... The horror...

The original Japanese version is definitely worth watching.
And yeah, people wigged out at a certain part of the movie and fled lol

Ichi The Killer was the first of his movies I’d seen. I ended up seeing late night on Starz when I was sixteen or so (truly the best age to see it). Honestly, I would call Ichi a horror movie, and amazingly, it’s much tamer than the original manga it’s based off of. Fantastic movie; I need to give it a watch again soon.

That movie was one helluva drug.

Yeah that's about the age I was when I saw it too. x) I've only seen it once and it's another movie I remember a surprising amount of things about, guess it left an impact on me. Never read the manga though, but if it's more nuts than the film I'm very interested.

I watched The Ring and The Grudge remakes and they were pretty good, but one that I don't hear get mentioned enough is Dark Water. Supposedly it is based on a Japanese movie, but I haven't seen the original. This movie is pretty good though, I recommend it.

I've seen an actual dubbed Japanese short film that claimed to be a shorter version of the American one above. My wife and like that J one. Never seen the actual "Dark Water" one. No spoliers! :)

How about Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead?

I watched it but don't remember much other than the girl flying around with fart power

Seen it. Hate it. It was overly stupid and juvenile to me, and I can usually forgive that if it’s at least entertaining.

I enjoy many types of Asian Horror films but for Japanese specifically my favorite was an old anthology DVD of five stories called Dark Tales of Japan (I think it was from the early 2000s). What was intriguing to me about this particular set was the Princess Bride Narrator Style set up and framing. The way it plays out being an early example of a creepy pasta or short form serial-horror like the Are You Afraid of the Dark, or R.L. Stine Goosebumps T.V. shows. However, in my opinion, this anthology was definitely suited to a more mature audience, even though there was some humor and jump-scares, as the material in general was far darker. Of the five episodes I really enjoyed episode 2 - Crevices and episode 5 - Presentiment. All the episodes were directed by storied Japanese Horror directors; whom all have done much larger/more renowned works.

As for Asian Horror in general my absolute favorite standalone film is a Korean movie called A Tale of Two Sisters - It combines many aspects of my favorite horror game/movie tropes into one nice package. Very Fatal Frame II inspired but with all the psychological turmoil of the Silent Hill series.

House is a near masterpiece even if I don't think of it as "real" horror. Incredibly creative and hilarious. I never really thought of Battle Royale in that way either, but I guess all those types of movies could be seen as such. Great movie.
I've seen the Japanese Dark Water, it's not bad. Based on a story by the same writer as Ring so it's in the same vein. I thought the first One Missed Call was good (the Japanese original). It's true that it takes ideas from the whole J-horror wave and puts them all together, but it does it more efficiently and is faster-moving. It's like a concentrate of all those movies. The munchausen angle was interesting too. Sweet Home is a pretty typical haunted house story, nothing amazing.
There were lots of movies about ghosts, vampires, etc. long before the term "j-horror" came out in the late '90s, and a really good one is Lake of Dracula. It's one of those movies where you worry for the main character.
For a completely random one that came after the genre's prime, Haunted School: The Curse of the Word Spirit is way better than it gets credit for. Intriguing story, creepy atmosphere, well-worth a watch IMO.

Noroi the Curse was phenomenal. Some others I recommend are The Cure, and The Cult
The cinematography kind of reminds me of Black Metal album covers, very atmospheric and "cold" in a way

Edit: based on the picture, though I'll probably have to check it out if I can find it somewhere!

I cannot say I've watched many but I kinda liked Parasite Eve. I need to read the novel someday.
The Parasite Eve movie is alright (for those who don't know, it's based on the novel which is a prequel to the games and really doesn't have much in common except the mitochondria idea), but the same director made a movie called Hypnosis (1999)/Saimin that I really recommend. It's got a bit of horror but it plays out more like an investigation into strange occurrences that gets pretty crazy. The storyline is straight pulp on paper but it's done in a way that elevates the material, with some very striking visuals and meaningful moments.
