Mine must be Cuphead, i love retro cartoons and Especially Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, so playing a game with that aesthetic with my favorite genre and a Hard-but-fair challenge was 2017's surprise to be sure

Aside, my personal top 7 must be:
1) Pizza Tower: Is to 90's animation what Cuphead is to 40's animation
2) Blasphemous: I am a sicker to Soulslike Metroidvanias, and i genuinely learned some Spanish Religion
3) Undertale: A brief game with tons of Lore and charm with a unique battle system :)
4) Off (Mortis Ghost): Think Undertale but serious
5) Shovel Knight: If you get the Treasure Trove, you get a win, even vanilla is a great NES throwback
6) Little Nightmares Duology: Tim Burton aesthetic+puzzles=WIN
7) Lone Wolf Treat Series: Bite sised RPG Maker Explorers with fuzzy characters and a light but deep story about carnivore discrimination

That one is difficult. I'd say overall, Desktop Dungeons. It's such a clever game that it is hard to define, it has elements of roguelike as well as puzzle and resource management. A lot of classes, items and races to unlock with plenty of challenge and cool synergies.

There are two versions: the original 2013 one (called Desktop Dungeons Enhanced Edition) and a more recent remake called Desktop Dungeons Rewind.

Both are good, but my recommendation is pick up the original 2013 one if you have to choose one, and then slap on a fan mod called Extreme Edition on it, since EE fixes some nonsensical design quirks the developers put in the game and even backports the mechanical changes from the remake to the original.

My favorite is Rimworld. It's a colony sim with one of the best modding communities.

Some other games I like are Slay The Spire, Dead Cells, Streets of Rogue.

I like Rimworld as a concept, but the graphics put me off somewhat, and that's strange because I'm generally not a graphics person. The others you mentioned are absolute gems too, though I could never consistently play Dead Cells past cell level 2.

Mine is Assault Android Cactus+ it's a simple bullet hell but I love it so much I have got 100% achievements on it twice.

Honorable Mentions: I also love these games but but not as much as ^Cactus^

And I forgot to add Tormented Souls. The one best thing that my country (thanks Dual Effect for that) has made in recent years.

The indie that always sticks out to me is Dragon: A Game About A Dragon. I would recommend it to anyone that likes indie games. Its a side-scroller, Its funny and its all hand drawn with color pencils. Lots of cameos and references to various other games. I just think its great.

The combat is solid and the Metroidvania exploration is my favorite in any Metroidvania. The game is really addictive to replay

Her Story got me hooked from beginning to end despite its simplicity.

Rogue Legacy 1 and 2 are some of my favorite indie games. Loved the Torree games as well as Night in the Woods, Hollow Night, VVVVVV, Fez and many others

Mine was Lakeview Cabin Collection.

There was something about the first part of the game that had me enraptured like never before. The fact that there was a single character you had to kill, but he was really difficult to kill, and you had to figure out how to use everything to your advantage to do so, was just brilliant. I've never wanted to learn as much about a game's mechanics as I did with that game. The sandbox puzzle element also really added to the charm.
