Actually, the basis is the historical figure of Saint Nicholas (San Nicola, here in Italy), who was a bishop dressed in red, and also the symbolism of the color itself for the Christmas holidays (which is linked to pagan figures and elements like winter berries and "Christmas Star" plants).
Like said, the inspiration comes from Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century bishop who was known for his generosity, and wore red bishop's robes (symbol of royalty and charity)
