Favorite "AAA slop"?

Well, would not know nothing about that I closed /v/ more than less permanently in 2014-ish and even then I thought that was later than should've.

And I'd like to think I outlined with specific examples but ones you can watch entire Threat Interative breakdowns for more in-depth analysis about the current technical degenerative state of AAA industry. And the word is absolutely accurate there because you can break it down to say "AAA developers these days are absolutely more sloppy and careless about how they do things than in the past"
And I keep saying AAA developers because ironically smaller studios and indies are making technically sound decisions for their games more often than not still.
Yeah your definition was good too I think. It's a less common one but still very accurate.

It's different for everyone, which is why I was interested in knowing specifically the games people like despite acknowledging they would define them as such, and I think everyone's been pretty cool about keeping to the question at hand?

To me "AAA slop" means games that contain mechanics and trends that are designed to cater to as many players as possible at the same time, often diluting the experience, or games being designed in a way where it constantly tries to keep your attention, usually to the detriment of the experience.

That's just my general definition, though.

Edit: I'd also say that it can be different for different genres.
That's how I define it too. Low effort, checkbox driven and designed by comitee. It differs for everyone, but for me at least, open world is always a huge red flag. Going completely against the grain here, GTA has always been this for me.

I'll be the first to admit that I genuinely like "open world" as a concept. The execution is often far from perfect, but those games are often a "more than the sum of its parts" kind of deals when I really like them.

Yeah I think in essence its a good idea, but it's difficult to execute on. Forza Horizon is probably an example of open world/sandbox that works because it is decently focused, but it's an exception rather than a norm in my experience.

Mine would be FPS campaigns (I loved playing COD MW 1-3 and BO1, BF4) and racing games (I played a lot of Need For Speed from the PS2 era, and I have like 6 days of gameplay in Forza Horizon 5).

360era Cod is more mainstream than sloppy, its not a genre I like but its not bland
Plus bo's zombie mode is fantastic

As much as I hate Modern Ubisoft, I'll admit that I kind of liked Far Cry 5 and 6, they're pretty derivative games, but I find them a lot of fun overall. I also like Assassin's Creed Syndicate/Origins/Valhalla, they are some of the better Post-Black Flag games and I really like the aesthetics of Syndicate.

I think Just Cause 4 falls into this. A very mediocre game that had hundreds of uninspired and repetitive missions, but it was fun to mess around with its mechanics and physics and the open world, although a bit empty, had a great sense of scale.

It's more that it's not *my* favorite genre, so I would consider them kind of ""generic AAA slop"". When making a top 10 favorite games, I wouldn't think about any COD or Need For Speed (even though I like Most Wanted), to be honest, that wouldn't be the case, not even for a top 30 games.

Call of Duty Ghosts. Most of the franchise is AAA slop and Ghosts doesn't even rank highly among fans of the series; but I have such fond memories of playing it 1v1 with my little brother that its my favorite of the slop.

I see but bo1 generic? Its got a lot of creative stuff
The main menu, all the easter eggs, the zombie mode, the violence, the big location variety..
Music's pretty good too

It's not slop. It's just AAA. Slop means soulless, cashgrab stuff.
the broader context refers to something that originated on 4chan as "goyslop", consumerist media made for goys, a term made synonymous with "sheeple" (sheep + people). slop is something fed to swine, so the connection is that the consumers are herded cattle that accept whatever their overlords feed them. obviously, goy is a term used by jews to categorise non-jews as not jewish, linking the label of slop and goyslop to the common narrative of jews controlling media, etc;

most refined products will be soulless, because they are made to be generic, to be unobtrusive, to not go against the accepted norm. slop would then have to refer to something else, and among people who use the term as "goy"slop it has to mean something other than low-quality. it has to be very intrusive and coded in meaning.

technically speaking, San Andreas is not really a good game, it is just a mimicry of a trend that was popular the late 90s to mid 2000s about ghetto and black gangster culture. a generic bad cop narrative, gangsters are people, too, in a bizarre and meandering story that involves federal agents, a secret military prototype, helping out a chinese triad, etc; none of which have anything to do with "the hood" as the primary motif. and that is just the setting. its gameplay elements are curious. the game has a large map, but it only serves as filler, while the cities put together are as large as the urbans in the 3D games. the gunplay is bad, with a weak audio-visual fidelity.

i would not call it a slop game, certainly not goyslop, but it is not incorrect to think it is a soulless cashgrab, since ultimately it does not say anything about the state of the "urban community". it is no wonder that these games are set in fictional U.S. cities and not in an actual ones, they just copy and paste the landmarks or general feel to make you think you are in a place, doing something, but are not actually doing anything.

Modern COD titles, I honestly play for the campaign and never for the multiplayer, hell I never even play online and have no intention to.

What a terrible analysis.

Grand Theft Auto is a comedic series. DId you really expect a fucking GTA game to have serious social commentary you fucking dunce? It's literally just a game series made by Europeans to make fun of Americans.

you don't have to call me a "fucking" dunce, first off, second - its narrative genre does in no way prohibit it from telling a meaningful story. it just does not have it as a goal. "San Andreas" has a corrupt police officer trying to bend the law into his own hands by creating a crack empire. none of that is comedic by itself. Nor are the character motivations of the main cast comedic. the games make it a point to poke and make fun of aspects of american culture, which is where most of the humor comes from, but the core of the stories is an outlaw getting even for some injustice he has been through.

I guess the closest to "AAA slop" that I like are the modern Pokemon games, but it's weird to put a Nintendo game in the same category of stuff like Assassin's Creed and CoD, even if they suffer from the same problems.

Not sure if I play any games that fall into this category. The only "popular new" games I play are mostly Nintendo first-party games, Elden Ring, and Monster Hunter.
But I'm not sure these fall into the "AAA slop" category as defined.

I liked Assassin's Creed 2 a lot, but that was 15 years ago LOL
