i have actually not played this but it looks cool! is it hard?

also i am now thinking that panorama cotton isnt really a shmup but a rail shooter...

but i will count it because i love cotton ww
It's pretty easy to start off, then it gets Colossus's boulders hard XD

Too many good ones... I'd probably say my top 5 (in no particular order) is Thunderforce IV, Gaires, Gleylancer, Musha Aleste, and Eliminate Down.
Honourable Mentions... the other 2 Thunderforce games on MD (particularly 3), Truxton/Tatsujin, Biohazard Battle/Crying, and Battle Mania/Trouble Shooter 1+2... as well as some of my guilty pleasures; Arrow Flash, Whip Rush, and Zero Wing.

Shmup was the shit in the 80s and 90s (even though I wasn't even born in those years)
But man it was such a simple, but fun concept (just shoot every last one of them, that's my kind of fun).

For example (like the guy above me said), Greylancer, Darius, Twinkle Tale, Thunder Force series, Undead Line and Ranger X.

Most of these games just look so sooooo good for it's time, you can tell Sega was really trying to beat Nintendo (they did for awhile)

Thunder Force III was the game that really made me fall in love with shmups, and I prefer it to IV. A pleasant if easy jaunt with excellent vibes.

I love this topic so much - the Cotton series is so cozy to me!

I've got 3 games that wanna mention:
- Gynoug/Wings of Wor
- Super Fantasy Zone
and (doing my best Mark from Classic Game Room)
- TRUXTON!!

MegaDrive had a lot of great shmups. If I had to choose one it would be Musha Aleste. I love aesthetics and gameplay of this game. This game together with Robo Aleste shows how much Compile was on the top of the game when it comes to the shmup making.

I would like Panorama Cotton if the MD was actually able to handle its graphical effects but much like many other overly ambitious titles from the era, it just hurts my eyes.

it is pretty wild and all over the place, but its so pretty and impressive for the time! :3

i havent played the remake to see if it runs better tho, could be worth a shot :o

I agree with your choices. I too appreciated X Ranger quite a bit, which for the time was a rather unusual and if you will also bold shmup. There was none of the frenzy of titles in the same genre and indeed, breaks were sometimes mandatory to recharge shields.

I kinda like Steel Empire. Although tbh it's more the concept and aesthetic I like rather than the game itself (it's way too hard for someone who sucks at shooters as much as me).

It's basically inspired by Jules Verne-esque steam punk aviation.

There's even a 2018 remake available on Steam:

I agree that it's faux Super Scaler-like effects are impressive, at the very least. There's a game made by HAL on the SNES that has similar albeit simpler effects.

Oh dear is it just me or are these images not available anymore?

Personally a big fan of Grind Stormer even if the port is watered down. It's really cool seeing what's essentially a prototype DonPachi running on Genesis hardware.

Too many good games to choose honestly:

I really loved ThunderForce IV's metal soundtrack and high quality sprite art (almost Saturn esque) but I also kinda liked Biohazard Battle weird organic feel despite how rough it was at times.

Gynoug was also bizarre yet enticing because I also like when a shmup isn't just about spaceships in sci-fi environments.

For me it's a tossup between Gaiares, Thunder Force IV and Zero Wing (and no, not for the translation, i legitimately like the game, though i've never beaten it legitimately).

I like Zero Wing's OST but its gameplay is a bit... generic.

I think as a Shmup I preferred Gley Lancer.

Shmup's in general are unique in that no single game could be considered amazing by everyone, for example i like gekirindan, esp ra de and espgaluda, but my favorite style is side scroller types instead of top down, so it's one of those things that's just impossible to get everyone to agree on.

That said as i said, i've never beaten zero wing legitimately, i've always had to cheat, which is probably why i'm a bit softer on it compared to normally, because the penalty for death is far too massive in the game (same with blazing lazers, another game i like).
