GameBoy Fan equips LEGO Game Boy with LCD display and a emulator but it gets even crazier

LEGO recently released an official set recreates the legendary Nintendo Game Boy. The model is a stunningly detailed LEGO recreation of the handheld albeit without a working screen. So you can't play it. But one modder had a problem with that.

LCD display and emulator built in​

German coder and modder Sebastian Staacks is a self-proclaimed LEGO and Game Boy fan, took on the set and quickly rebuilt it. He searched online for a suitable LCD screen that could be installed into the LEGO case. The display can be connected to a real Game Boy via USB to display gameplay footage. Staacks also connected the screen to an emulator so theoretically any Game Boy game can be played on the LEGO model at least visually.

No playable LEGO handheld yet but maybe soon?​

Despite the screen the LEGO Game Boy currently remains a showcase object: games run as a video not interactively. Staacks emphasizes that it would be technically possible to connect the LEGO buttons to a controller thus creating a fully functional Game Boy out of LEGO.

Australian modder actually makes the set playable​

Australian modder and circuit board designer Natalie the Nerd wasn't satisfied with the mere look. Within a very short time she converted the LEGO set to actually play real Game Boy games from original cartridges without the need for a Raspberry Pi or emulator tricks.

Natalie explains that she designed her own miniature motherboard including all the chips and necessary components. For the display she uses the smallest screen kit available on the market which fits perfectly inside the LEGO shell although that she had to remove one or two bricks to make room.

Soon also with functional buttons​

The buttons aren't finalized yet they'll soon be integrated via a dedicated PCB that allowing the LEGO set to be controlled like a full-fledged Game Boy. The device already runs on USB power and Natalie plans to share her circuit diagrams publicly so other fans can build their own LEGO handhelds too.

I always find it great what talents some people have. Honestly, I have no idea about this and I wouldn't be able to do something like that

LEGO, Eh... I don't know. This is nothing but good free publicity, and unlike Nintendo, they seem more laid back about stuff like this.

People use LEGO bricks for all kinds of crazy things, and I have never heard of LEGO suing anyone over it.
To quote Google

"Lego has sued third-party vendors and custom builders who sell modified Lego parts or original creations for profit, but
it does not sue individual customers for personal use"

Like I said, LEGO doesn't care what you do with their blocks after you buy them, as long as you aren't making a profit off what you do.

I wouldn't think they would need to. It's not their fault what the end user does. And unless they are absolutely strong-armed by the Nintendo lawyer ninja, I don't think they will bother or even care for that matter.

Now, I could see if there's another Nintendo collaboration with LEGO, Nintendo making them put in a "Do not modify under penalty of law" clause in their agreements.

This project probably costs as much as a good condition DMG, and the funny thing is it might be slightly better since it has a better screen.
