Extremely Weird And Obscure Games

One of the best platformers i've ever played, thanks haunted ps2 games series

One of my favourite less-known platformers is the Umihara Kawase series. The best one is probably Sayonara Umihara Kawase for the 3DS and Vita. Quirky little platformer with physics-based swinging mechanics, it's really fun trying to master the game and beat old high-scores!

(P.S. I LOVED Blinx)

Rockin Katz on NES, a fun little plataformer where you play as a cat with the biggest weapon in toonland: the retractable boxing glove
This is what I’m talking about! Never heard of it, but you bet I’ll emulate it when I get the chance!

Based. I love Umihara Kawase. I think the aesthetic of the SNES ones are so comfy for some reason lol. I always wanted to learn to do some speedrun on it, seems tough af and fun

Good to know, alas, be wary of some of the levels being flatout cheap if you don't know the tricks (like attacking a wall to bounce of it, ditto for the floor) and grabbing in the roofs to spin may be tricky, still doable

Mighty Bomb Jack on the NES
None one heard of it at the time, its never on any lists, it just kind of fell through the cracks.
which is sad because its a great tricky game.

View attachment 43163Thankfully it always gets re-released! I’ll have to check it out via NSO when I get back to my Switch.

I don't think it's that obscure but Cave Story is highly underrated for how great of a game it is. I almost never hear people talk about it.

A lot of indie hits are mentioned offhand or not at all nowadays. Braid, Fez, VVVVVV, and so on.

The ones I continue to hear about are Shovel Knight and Super Meat Boy.

ok my head is drawing a blank (which obv is uncommon for me as I nearly always have the opposite problem) but uhm... the Rocket Knight/Sparkster franchise? all 4 are badass, top-notch Konami masterwurx. Metal Slug 1st n 2nd mission for NGPC? even though it's on lots of Sega compilations, it feels like Pulseman never got his due... Ristar maybe did, but not the former. also for Gen/MD - DecapAttack/Magical Hat's Turbo-Flying Adventure... Socket/Time Dominator... GameFAQs lists Impossible Mission for multiple 80's platforms n Zillion for SMS as 2D Plats but c'mon now. If the Wonder Boy/Monster World series n Simon's Quest are retroactively considered metroidvanias than Impossible Mission n ZiLLion certainly are as weLL. AstaL, Clockwork Knight 1 n 2, Bug n Bug Too!, Mr. Bones... there's too many, I will have to organize n compile a list for ya brvh - as you can tell I try to be thorough xD

True! The PAL community loves them, but they never took over in the U.S., so that basically sealed their fate in a lot of ways. Super unfair how hard U.S. controls the narrative on retro games to be honest. Too many games get unfairly overlooked because they did poorly in the U.S.

Rascal on the PlayStation, the BEST platformer ever created that revolutionized the genre and helped create the atmosphere for gaming we have today!

2D
Rocky Rodent
Hermie Hopperhead
Tempo, Super Tempo
Punky Skunk
Kitchen Panic
Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa
DinoCity
TryRush Deppy
Marvel Land
Dragon Egg!

3D
Ling Rise
Super Magnetic Neo
Napple Tale
Ninja Jajamaru-kun Onigiri Ninpouchou
Shake Kids
Floating Runner
Dreams to Reality
Tiny Bullets
Doraemon Nobita to Fukkatsu no Hoshi

There's this game called Dead Heat by Bandai Namco that I played at an amusement park one time. (the cabinet in the arcade section of the park was old and decrepit, the NOS button didn't work, and the steering wheel broke off while I was playing.)
It had this neat little feature where the game takes a picture of each player's face before every race and you can see all the other players faces during the race.

About fifteen years ago, my local arcade in Springfield, Oregon had one of these whackass beetle fighting games made by Sega:

NGL, I really liked it! Totally had the card it would spit out, so I could play with the same beetle each time and help it grow stronger. I only played the game a few times before it got swapped out for something else, unfortunately 😣

I grew up a "bug kid," and loved collecting bugs from the yard and putting them in a little wood and mesh holder that I had built. Only found a few Stag Beetles over the years, but I was always so fascinated by them - though I never made them fight. But at least I had this arcade game to help give me an idea of how that may have played out...
