Everyone goes to Pizza Hut: Real life brands in games

I mean, Pikmin 2 is all about the product placement... and better for it, I think! Makes the game feel much more real-world when you're digging up Duracells instead of "batteries."

View attachment 48617

Honorable mention goes to Parasite Eve 2 and it's sporadic Coca-Cola branding.

View attachment 48618

Not-So-Honorable Mention goes to the dilapidated Pepsi Machines in the ill-fated Bionic Commando reboot. Probably not what PepsiCo had in mind when they signed off on that endorsement...

View attachment 48619

EDIT: The Pizza Hut branding from the NES Ninja Turtles Arcade Game is, maybe, the earliest product placement I can remember in a videogame. Though the Pepsi machine (and cans!) in Maniac Mansion is damn close...

Wow, this could almost be its own thread: "How Many Games Have Pizza Hut / Pepsi Appeared In??" 😝
No idea about Parasite Eve 2!

Nobody likes being forced to watch ads, yet sometimes they can be actually charming! There's something really neat about seeing real brands on ps1/2 models or old 2d games
I used SH1 as an example because all of it is unauthorized, the team just Liked adorning the tow having a huge mish mash of Americana+whatever stuff they liked. It just gives it a whole feel yknow

Didnt know about the pepsi machines in Maniac Mansion either!
Lol

I think the first appearance of Pepsi in a videogame is..

Zool came with a free lollipop in the case, now that's something I wouldnt mind more games doing!

I cant find the picture but someone found a copy with the chupa chups still in the case after 30 years, it had turned into a flat hard red slab

The of the most bizarre examples has to be the replacing of Nuka Cola with Bawls Guarana in the ill-fated Fallout Brotherhood of Steel.

It's funny how nuka cola became one of the most iconig videogame foods in the west, when it was just something someone at the table suggested when they were brainstorming ideas for a soda item since they couldnt just call it "coca cola"
(
tim cain is in the video)

Btw those stupid rocket bottles in fallout 4 suck, what were they thinking

You're probably right about Pepsi Invaders, OP 🤣

Last night, I remembered California Games!

It was on damn near everything back in the day, but I remember playing it on the 2600 and NES the most. It was cool in that you got to pick a sponsor at the start of the game and essentially compete for them in the in-game events. Doesn't sound like much, but for this old skater, it's as close as I'll ever come to being sponsored by Santa Cruz 😭

The santa cruz thing reminded me of Downhill DOmination form ps2 (awesome game) having ebay billboards

It reminds me of when shopping on the internet was a new thing so you gotta advertise this new ebay website

Old Namco Pole Position had plenty of brands to "choose", among those agip(an old Italian petroleum association), Marlboro, Canon, among others.

I had no idea, woah! Is this the first time Agip showed up in a videogame?? :0

I've had Tootsie roll pops from my times in america, by comparison Chupa Chups are less aggressively sweet and more fruity; I like em way better

They also have such a pretty logo + neat unique stand. No joke the stand is what makes me get em 80% of the time, whoever designed it is a genius
..I should get one tomorrow

Chibi-Robo: Zip Lash on the 3DS has the most in-your-face product placement of any piece of media I've ever seen. A major element of the game is completing bonus challenges that reward you with real-world candy and snacks, which have picture-perfect replications of both their packaging and the actual food themselves displayed (and available as collectible models that can be viewed at any time) along with detailed descriptions of their mouthfeel and taste by NPCs.

Also, whenever you get one of these items, the game prompts you to share screenshots of it on Miiverse, so you can enjoy the virtual snacks with you friends... and the world. ;->

I have a theory that, because the game was essentially just meant to slightly increase the value of the Chibi-Robo amiibo (it's a very short, easy platformer), Nintendo just used this advertising to fund the game's budget so they didn't have to spend anything on it. It's an unbelievable sell-out, but I actually really like it for how shameless it is.

The fact that there's a first-party Nintendo game where you can discuss how much you LOVE Tootsie-Roll-brand Tootsie Pops™ (registered trademark of Tootsie Roll Industries, all rights reserved) with NPCs, and especially the fact that it happens in the sequel to a game very specifically about the dangers of consumerism, is just funny as fuck to me. I hope these show up in Metroid Prime 4, too.

"So it's just a 2d game about a robot"

"a BAD 2d game about a robot."

"Those exist?"

"Not until 2015 they didnt!"

2015 was a bad year for 2d games about a robot between it and mighty number 9

I never thought about that theory but dang it DOES make sense, the game is so cheap looking I can see it..

Just the year before Yoshi's new island came out....the 3ds sure has a lot of mediocre platformers

There's a lot of love for the 3DS nowadays and honestly I feel its not nearly as good as its made out to be. There are some gems for sure, and I was 17 in high school when it came out so I'm not quite primed for its nostalgia, but the library just isn't there for me. Living through that era there was always a sense of "okay, cool...but when are we *really*getting started?" But I was an early adapter too so I guess the initial software drought still taints my memory.

Im assuming its from zoomers who grew up with it right? I dont know how people who were born before 1996 think

It is cool that coke gives you MP and BP in PE2.

I remember seeing ads ingame cs1.6/cz. Does this count? lol

I'll now keep an eye out and post what I find.

Also in CoD:MW3 2011 A real life gun company Remington was featured.
The ACR 6.8, RSASS, and MSR has it.
