Holy crap, that MSN page looks like garbage. At any rate, pretty safe picks for #2 (SMB3) and #1 (SMW). Otherwise yeah, much left to opinion indeed. I haven't played like half those games, though I would rate SML2 and SMB2 decently high myself.

Yea, that list has some pretty strange justifications. I also would never include the Mario Maker or mobile games as part of the core series, though they're pretty good. My personal rankings - I tend to think NSMB for Wii is SUPER underrated.

That list is just complete scrambled up nonsense. enbrodo's list above was what I was expecting & is 10 times more agreeable with than what was read.
Yoshi's Island shares first place with some of the other titles.
SM64 DS deserves some respect too methinks! But not even mentioned?

Kotaku is simply the worst. They make fun at great games and piss all over them with bad jokes and awful writing. How is SMB and Mario Land 2 lower than Sunshine? In fact, I hate articles about ranking every Mario game from worst to "OH MY GOT IT'S THE GREATEST GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED IN MY LIFE!". It's just cringe.

That said, I've found pretty much everyone that did the subject blissfully unaware of what the real worst Super Mario game is. There's a reason I'm working on something about it.

I think it's very hard to find what's the worst Super Mario game, whether be main or spinoff. So far, my 5 worst Super Mario games are...

1. Mario Strikers Battle League
2. Mario Tennis Ultra Smash
3. Mario Party 10
4. Mario Party Advance
5. Mario Pinball Land

Sure these are Mario Spinoffs, but I can't find which Main Mario Series is awful. I guess Super Mario Sunshine could be the worst in the mainline Mario games since it took away all the fun move-sets and power-ups from Mario 64 and introduced the blue coin collecting nightmare. Fortunately, a new romhack fixes that with Super Mario Sunburn. Not sure Mario Run counts because it's on an Iphone/Android, not on a major Nintendo console.
