I wasn't really allowed to talk to strangers online as a kid/teen... but that wasn't going to stop me or my equally mischievous sisters!

We became pretty permanent fixtures on Yahoo! and its many chatrooms for a while, offending people just because and getting told off by a whole bunch of older strangers for acting our ages (16, 14, 11) in increasingly embarrassing ways xD

It was AMAZING!

We are lucky we didn't attract a DIFFERENT kind of attention, honestly — We WERE asking for it.

Still, we had a lot of fun and we all look back fondly on those times and the many usernames we can still recall from those pointless, awesome fights tackled in between rounds of Flash games.

You?

I was on Live Journal in like 2004 or 2005 for a week or so, it was weird and I didn't go on any chatroom type site until a dating chatroom via the Vodafone network in 2008 where I did meet a woman I dated for a while.

I remember being peer pressured by friends in college to do Omeagle like a prank at their house. It was practically mortifying to me as I'd heard all tales of fear simply interacting with things like that.

Not sure if this sort of thing counts as a chatroom, but a game I play, that being 100% Orange Juice, hosts a chatroom where the four players actively participating can use it to send emotes relating to the game and can host four other spectators who wishes to chat among themselves and the players involved as the carnage unfolded. Twas a wonderful time, and I have that addictive sort or bearing to it that must have been effective, because I have spent a very good long time on that game. Sometimes the chatroom was the better experience then the actual game itself. ::sailor-embarrassed

I did when I was younger, I would say around my teens. I played on Gaia Online and had fun with the chatrooms there, I remember when sites or blogs had there own live chatrooms and would dive in and talk to randoms all over the net!

Boy... you and your sisters must really cocky at that time.

For a moment i read "ever went on to the backrooms" lol
"It was nice to visit but utterly boring..."

I also did Yahoo!'s chatrooms back when we first got net. Boy, there sure was a lot of "don't do this, ya dumb kid" that I did, looking back...

One of which was having my real first name in my ID (I remember catching hell from a physical world friend whose name I said in chats where we both were, and it's like, girl, I'm already exposed here), and I had several online relationships and at the same time, so that's not cool. Of course I shared my picture and received in turn, and I remember physically mailing one of my paramours for a while until things went sour; one of the stress points was me not remembering their eye color (which is kind of difficult when all you have is one picture and conversation and not physical contact). The last thing they said was something of a curse, saying that I would never know love.

I remember being messaged out of the blue about answering some question, and not knowing it because I was a dumb middle-schooler, proved that the education in my country was lacking compared to theirs.

I also remember avatars not being screened or moderated given brief exposure to hentai and porn that way.

I think I did okay but really pushed my luck, especially for timing. I couldn't imagine how bad it got after I stopped using them.

I'm not saying I wouldn't have done any of that (I totally would have if my older sister wasn't always around to prevent such tomfoolery), but I'm glad I didn't — that would have gotten me yet another world-class beating at home.

I tried chatrooms a bit once, but it was a short-lived experience. The conversations ended after a few sentences, which only served to fill me with more memories I'd rather forget.

I've learned to avoid chatrooms, especially considering how people can be on them. While I'm sure there're probably some people who would be respectful and have a genuine conversation I've seen and heard too many stories about the negatives to have any desire to try one.
