I'm very interested in this game, largely because I didn't even imagine that the Quake III engine could be turned into something like this... And it's incredible to behold.

Game's weird, gorgeous-looking, and has some of the best voice performances I had ever heard... I'd literally buy a PC just to play it, and I don't say that lightly.

So... Have YOU played it? What did you think of it? Tell us!

Oh yeah, I’ve played it and it’s wild how well it holds up. The fact that it’s running on the Quake III engine still blows my mind. They twisted it into something surreal and totally unique. The environments feel like they were ripped straight out of a fever dream, dark, jagged, and weirdly beautiful.

The voice acting? Legit some of the best I’ve heard in a game from that era. Susie Brann nails Alice’s vibe, wounded but sharp, and the Cheshire Cat’s lines are pure gold. Creepy, cryptic, and weirdly comforting.

And the soundtrack? Chris Vrenna went off. It’s like industrial lullabies for the emotionally unstable. Sets the tone perfectly.

Honestly, it’s one of those games that doesn’t just retell a story, it rebuilds it from the ashes. If you’re even half-curious, it’s worth tracking down. Just be ready for some janky platforming, it’s part of the charm. ::eggmanlaugh

Yep, bought it from Best Buy back in the day when I got some crappy eMachines PC. I think the first games I played on it were Alice and Undying. Best Buy had tons of physical PC games back then.

I also have it on PS3 and 360 since it came with Madness Returns. Madness Returns definitely plays better.

I love Alice, and I think it's a must-play if you enjoy late 90s/early 2000s era PC games. I'd recommend giving it a shot if you're interested. It's currently on My Abandonware, so it won't cost a thing.

Oh @Waffles sweetie, I owned it and Alice: Madness Returns....

The first one was a janky, clunky mess control wise, but it was absolutely weird, deranged, and psychotic.... right up my alley for games. It was fun once you got past the controls, which are probably patched and fixed now. But back then, nope... it was a pure slog to play the game.

Part Deux... Alice: Madness Returns, fixed a lot of the problems control wise.

The story actually wasn't nearly as deranged as the first game but was still out there enough. I would absolutely play the first game again if I knew the controls were fixed....

The second one, meh, I guess if I wanted to do a full story playthrough.

only played madness returns on rspc3 but i like it 🔪
Ah, they think the weirdness is their ally? They merely adopted the weirdness. You and I were born in it, molded by it. We didn't see normalcy until we were already a weirdo through and through. By then, it was nothing to us but blinding.

From my backloggd review: A mostly mediocre FPS / platformer hybrid saved by an incredible art direction. Though whether art direction can save a mediocre game is highly subjective. I guess one thing I can say about the gameplay is that, despite it frustrated me much more than other mid FPS games like KISS psycho circus (which I dropped), I completed this game because it never gets too repetitive or dull. The jumping is extremely janky, some of the later MOVING GEARS platforming made me feel physically bad and the attack -> run to collect mana orb thingy -> attack cycle is not interesting making most boss battles kinda tedious, but as poorly executed as it can be, its ambitious ideas still made me want to play the whole thing. 2.5/5

While my review does kinda seem very negative, its not a terrible game, just not very good either. It certainly has more soul compared to its sequel (which I couldn't finish because it would crash every 10min)
