Eiyuden Chronicles, now on my "favourite games" list.

I finished for the first time, without having heard of it for several months, Eiyuden Chronicles - Hundred Heroes, a JRPG that follows the graphic style of Octopath Traveler and the new Suidoken I & II HD.

I'm not really suited to playing them at normal speed, since I was a kid I played for example Pokémon on emulators by putting the turbo mode and finishing them in acceptable times. But this game, I don't know why, managed to capture me. Excellent music, excellent settings, still cute dialogues and unique and well characterized characters (obviously not in detail because, as you can deduce from the title, there are more than a hundred heroes to recruit for the final goal of the game that I won't spoil). The gameplay is simple, nothing innovative, but still fun.

There are some moments where it bugged me on PC, for example the camera that wobbles left and right, or the animations that repeat themselves, but in essence it was a beautiful adventure based on friendship and determination that managed to excite me. It was since the days of Final Fantasy IX that no game, apart from Persona 3 and 4, failed to make me feel this. With this I do not want to say that this game is the same as FFIX, otherwise I would say a blasphemy, but it achieves the purpose of entertaining very well. Personal opinion obviously, you are free to disagree.

I know that there is another chapter in the series, Eiyuden Chronicles - Rising, which I will obviously recover. Not before having played Suikoden I & II, because I refuse to say that the only one I have ever completed was the fourth chapter, lol.

Four gets a bad rap. It feels limited and overall smaller in scope compared to previous entries, but it ain't bad. And it objectively has the best camera, for what it's worth.

I'm kind of the complete opposite. I knew about it for years and was looking forward to it, but it lost my interest immediately when I tried playing it.

Yeah,, like hypnagogic said, I was looking forward to it, but Suikoden 2 set the bar way too high, man. This Eiyuden game was not on par even if it had better graphics. The story felt all over the place, and the characters weren't likable; nothing was interesting or mature like Suikoden 2 was.
However i will give it another chance now that you mentioned it.

Of course it's not a perfect game, and I admit that. I'm not a 100% expert in video games, but even the worst one, if it manages to convey something to me, that's enough to make it one of my favorites.

What do you say about Rising, is it better than this game?

If it's alright to toss my opinion in, Rising is *very* different. It's a relatively basic action platformer with some puzzles and exploration. It's still kinda fun, and I enjoyed the characters and setting, but it's clearly something the team had thrown together to smooth over the wait till Eiyuden Chronicles released. Kinda short, somewhat sweet.

Get it cheap and you won't be disappointed, I think.

All good, bro. I'm not an expert in video games either. I just played the "golden" era of RPGs, and I feel that RPGs now are inferior in story and characters.
Rising is totally different; I didnt even like that game lol

I too have played some of those games fortunately, like Final Fantasy VII or IX (first examples that came to mind, games that really impressed me), and the difference with today's games is definitely there...
