I had the disc of this game in the 90s and played a hell of it, so im suspicious to say that this game is good after understand the basics (aim lock, dodge, combos, etc).

But my favorite piece of this is game is the "dungeon crawler" paralel game into it, so many good ideas inside there. Could easilty be sold as a standalone game.

i don't really think i could make an accurate guide lol just the info out there is "good enough"
to be more clearer, the "info" that's wrong is, you don't get a SPECIFIC outfit
like the first thing i did was 10 hit combo in practice and i got Yoko's 3rd costume, not Jo
turns out whaever you did FIRST gives you Yoko's costume (any of these done first would give that)
the order of costume unlocks goes Yoko, Han, Doza, Dasher , Sasuke, Jo, Lee, and Godhand.
doing all the the unlock conditions will give you all of them regardless.
example of wrong info, on gamefaqs: the unlock conditions are right, just the rewards aren't

wow this is the most jank fighting game i've ever played!
the controller default schemes are all terrible, and i can't even SEE what "arcade, playstation, joy1, joy2" even DO to the controls, so i did custom for all of it.
also note for anyone playing this, DO NOT USE ANALOG MODE, it CHANGES THE ENTIRE GAME CONTROLS
every single guide and move list and etc is following the DIGITAL (no analog) controls.
it changes how you roll, dodge and jump, digital is how the original game and arcade machine is.
a lot of the "move lists" online follow the non analog mode, so yeah an FYI before anyone gets REALLY confused.
and most move lists say "upper/top/UP" for the high attack, and "lower/bottom/DOWN" for the low attack.
and wow the MOVES are so hard to do for everyone, like,
sidestep, high+low, low (with timing else it doesn't work), jump, high, 90 degree and punch, like all that in a row i mean.
no move list in game at ALL, in fact there's like ZERO move information in game,
just the buttons L,H,S,G, and jump and L+H (mediums are L+H apparently)
my control scheme was like
square triangle circle : L, L+H (medium), and H
X: jump
L1/R1: grab/throw
works for me

for easy reference, Godhand's rapid punch is H, L, H rapidly, you can do 10 hits or so rapidly, just for a easy cheap spam move for anyone struggling on this game.

and wow the UNLOCKS are extremely complicated, with no popups of any unlock ever showing up
to summarize (confirmed BY ME just recently aka the last 3 days)
characters unlock just by beating the arcade with everyone that's already available at the start.
completing game with the unlocked characters gives some costumes (not specifically FOR them)
and the rest of the pre-unlocked characters costumes have insane conditions.
a costume doing a 10 hit combo
costume getting a high score in infinity mode
costume for each of the minigames.
a costume doing tile battle and winning 10 times IN A ROW, and clear evil tile mode good luck lol (save states help)
a costume doing the true ending (actually kill the final boss during the credits and grab the sword)
a costume beating arcade in 3 mins 20 seconds or lower (1round and shorter round time really help but it's still pretty close unless you're really good at comboing)
a costume for watching every movie scene in game (you don't know which ones are missing so good luck with that lol)
btw theres a secret 2nd opening video, if you wait fot teh opening to play FOUR times in a row (this takes in real time about 20 mins, emulation fast forward helps, again it won't SAY you got the new opening and WON'T play it automatically, you have to go to movie viewer and press right on opening if you have it to even see it, yes you need this for the costume unlocking too)
BTW it gives out costumes in a specific order (doesn't matter what condtion you do first, it's the same order, clair's 3rd costume unlocks first and then a preset list from there)
most sites have wrong/misinformed info, like no matter what you do FIRST, you get clair's 3rd costume
AGAIN, NO POPUP SAYING YOU UNLOCKED ANYTHING SO YOU HAVE TO CHECK THE COSTUME IS EVEN THERE
like clairs red cop outfit (costume 3 is down+choose character)
godhands red mohawk costume
clouds SOLDIER uniform
tifas cowgirl hat uniform
sepiroth shirtless
and etc, i haven't gotten all of them yet.
if you wanna know which characters costume 3 you don't have? , tough luck!
btw outfit 2 is UP+picking the character, outfit 3 is Down+ choose character, you do NOT get a confirmation until the match starts up.

and OMG THE TILE BATTLE IS SO HARD, that's insanely fast from match 1
you have to win 10 times IN A ROW, not 10 total, 10 in a row, good fraeking luck, i cheesed it with save states and rewind and slow game speed.
this give you evil tile battle mode, which you have to hit L1+L2+R1+R2+X on tile battle (only after you won 10 times in a row)
beat that for a costume

so yeah, i hate how confusing it is to check what you already completed and unlocked, outside movies (which only show the title of the movie NOT the character it was for!!)
highly recommend beating each character in the selection order, so you don't get confused

and the new quest mode is an entirely seperate mode, with its own save file and own title menu
in fact you have to hard reset the game to GO back to the main menu to play arcade or versus or minigames
quest mode might as well be a whole different game it's nothing like the normal battle modes and way more RPG

but anyways man the absolute worst thing to do in this game is 360 motion and GRAB, WHILE close to the enemy, everyone does that for their special throw,
but jesus this isn't streetfighter good luck hitting the right direction quickly after the 360 and grab,
i literally can't lol. (and i main Zangief in SF2!!)
