I read the two comments and find them difficult to follow, but I will try to summarize:

  • This Japanese Mega/Sega CD version in Japan is a 2-disc compilation of the two Mega Drive / Genesis games, with enhancements
  • The only equivalent product in US and Europe was separate ports of the Mega Drive games to Mega CD, as two products (again), instead of a compilation like the Japanese CD version
  • Different new ambient CD-music soundtrack
  • New cinematic scenes in Ecco II

This version is so cool... they just made a compilation of both Mega-CD versions, and sell them together, unlike in US and Europe, were they sold them separately... again (after the MD versions).
Being enhanced ports of Mega Drive games... SEGA had to do that everywhere with these MCD versions. Would have been a nice deal, with the new CD music.

The Mega CD version is obviously based in both games from the Mega Drive version, although the most obvious difference is in the soundtrack, which is completely different and more ambient and of better quality and also to tell cinematic scenes in the second installment and unlike the Western versions of both games, the Japanese version of the game comes on 2 discs which are the Ecco the Dolphin I and II.
