Well, since I'm done with Max Payne and that I love Oni (the Bungie game from 2001 on the PS2 and PC) I've always wondering how old the genre actually is and what are your favourite classic games in it.

I'm also noticing that even if they share elements with FPS there's a clear distinction and feel with them (usually TPS protagonists have more personality and dialogues than their FPS counterparts until more recently, around the 7th generation).

Are there good modern ones with platforming elements and/or fun gimmicks beyond shooting to try out?

The first Third Person Shooters that I played.... may be was Tomb Raider and MDK

For actual Third Person Shooters... for me.... VANQUISH is the king

Lost Planet 1 has some interesting ideas, not sure about the sequels.

Ratchet & Clank is pretty solid. I'd recommend 2 and 3 though, since 1 is more of a platformer than a true third person shooter (still an amazing game btw).
I guess the same happened to Jax & Daxter.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!

My first 3rd person shooter game was Die Hard Trilogy. My personal favorites are Vanquish, Gungrave, and Evil West.

I still have the CD Rom, but I don't see myself touching it again.

played a bit of the second one and i think for whatever reason the boss is glitched on an earlier level not sure what to do but the game is still like monster hunter but gears of war

There's Total Overdose: A Gunslinger's Tale, which got released back in 2005 on PS2 and Xbox. It's a Max Payne knock-off so it fits the bill if you want to go back a couple generations. For a more modern titles, maybe Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2. Plenty to do aside from shooting, but the shooting is good too.
