So I've been thinking about buying a Dreamcast for the longest time and I'm ready to take the next step. I have yet to make my research on what model is the best (or most recommended) and what mods I would need to play games. The thing is I don't even know where to start, like where is the best place to buy a Dreamcast? What kind of prices should I expect to pay?

So far I'm aware of things like GDEMU and Utopia in terms of mods and stuff, I don't think I'm suited for soldering stuff so that's out of the equation.

If you have experience buying a Dreamcast on the internet, please lend me a hand with these:
- Best place to get one (Mercari, Ebay, etc.).
- Useful mods that are not hard to install (no soldering).
- Estimated prices for a console in a good condition.

Thanks in advance, and have a good day everyone ::datadance

If you get one, be sure to check out the VMU Pro or the VMU 2. They make every other VMU obsolete. And be sure to get the controller extension cable. The Dreamcast has a board for the controller ports and it has a fuse that can pop if a controller is disconnected while powered on. Also, only test burned games. Playing burned games for prolonged periods of time can wear the laser out faster than normal. And check out the Behar Bros for high quality HDMI outputs. I've had the Akura for years and it's been great.

Lets see
First you need
- a House
- a roof
- 3-6inchs thick drywall or bricks for walls
- a window
- some form of electricity
- an electric socket
- a chair
- a CRT tv
- a dreamcast
- a dreamcast controller
- a sd card
- a place to download roms
- a computer
- internet

I would suggest you avoid Ebay or any other Mercari that is not the japanese one. Obviously, the best places are places where you can find Dreamcast catalogued as junk, so you will get the best prices. I saw a few for around 2000-3000JPY without controller. But if you want something complete, you can go to Mercari, they are seen around 6000JPY, which is roughly 34€.

As long as you know what you're buying, any place should be ok, but remember, paying more than 70-80€ for a Dreamcast means you've been scammed by some western guy, unless the Dreamcast is in absolutely pristine condition.

Regarding GDEMU, the cheapest one you can find is on Aliexpress (around 7000JPY, just checked now). I would suggest to get 5.15b, as you will save even more money and the issues with games fixed on 5.20 can be patched in 5.15b in the games themselves.

The dreamcast can play games right out of the box, just pop a disc in and away you go.
It's not region locked then? Nice! My lack of research is really showing huh

I thought paying a bit more than 100 dollars would still be fine, but after going to Mercari Japan I don't know anymore. Anything under $100 still seems like an insane deal though, which makes me a bit skeptical, but we'll see.

If you want to play Dreamcast games via a CD-R, you need to get either a Model 0 or Model 1 Dreamcast, as those were the only models to have the ability to bypass both region lock and piracy protection. If you get a Model 2, you will need to mod it in order to play off of CD-R backups, since later models of the Dreamcast were made to prevent piracy.
If you want to play them without the CD drive, get a GDEMU (like the other have suggested).
I've never had a Model 2 as I always made sure to buy Model 0s and 1s, so I do not know if the GDEMU bypasses region lock/piracy protection on the Model 2.

Buy one that's been opened, cleaned, and refurbished. When you see a listing for one, if it doesn't have video or photographic proof of the cleaning and refurbing process, do not buy it, they are lying to raise the price. Someone who is legit about doing that stuff with consoles is proud of their work and will always show it.

They're expensive upfront, but if you wanna play on original hardware without having to shell out crazy prices for the ever-increasing Dreamcast market your best best is the TerraOnion ODE. Even at $250-300 it'll still save you a ton of money after just a few games, especially if you wanna play something like Illbleed that costs as much as the ODE itself to begin with.

Of course, there are also ways to play burned discs but I am very unfamiliar with the process.

As for the models themselves, it isn't relevant. None of them are all that distinct in featureset or reliability
