There are a TOTAL of 45 personalities, each with its own stat profile.

At the start of the game, you are asked to answer a series of moral/psychological questions presented in the form of scenarios.

Each answer you give influences a priority list of personality types and, in the end, the personality with the highest score is selected.

Your personality modifies stats growth rates per level , it basically works like this :

Base Growth × Personality Multiplier = FinalGrowth

Later in the game, depending on how you play, you can still influence your personality by reading a book, for example, to improve your intelligence.

Here's an overview, after replying , this is the summary I was given, feel free to post yours here :

This splendid topic has again been brought to you by nerdelitist, thank you for reading.

Just by chance, someone brought up the Dragon Quest 3 personality test last week while I was in a retro store. They said that if you answer it honestly, it's right on the money.

I'm tempted to skip 1 and 2 just to try out 3. I looooooove a personality-quiz-based class selection. Makes me think of old school Elder Scrolls games.

Then again in like....60% finished with 1, maybe i should actually finish it.

When you say 45 personalities, you mean the game gives you 45 different results or modern psychology statement?

Skip them with no remorse. In fact, highly advised to do so. Just remember to go back for them afterwards.

No, seriously. 3 is not just a prequel, the 2D-HD remakes released the remade 3 first because they want you to experience it before the first two.

i went straight to 4 on the DS. I should play 3 sometime.

The personality you end up with is based entirely on the little mini game you play at the end of the questions.

It's not eniterely based on mini games.

The questions lead you down different paths. After the mini-game, the game decides what you are from a limited number of options.

DO NOT SPOIL YOURSELF PLEASE IT'S JUST AN OVERVIEW !!!!!

These are not modern psychological profiles. Think of them more like 45 different character builds

Details and systens like this make a game unique! I always liked how in Pokemon you got differents IVs and Natures for them, even if just RNG. I like the quirk system of Darkest Dungeon too

DQ3 is not the first time they did this. In the original Dragon Quest your name influenced your base stats.
Also, Ultima IV which did whole personality questions to at the beginning of the game came out even earlier than the original DQ. From what I hear, DQ3 may have done it better three years later though.

True but the resulting final question isn't really personality based either and the choices you get in the final question don't really reflect the personality questions as well. It all seems a bit arbitrary and I find it kind of annoying to go through whenever I replay DQ3.

I disagree.

Both the minigame you get is based on your answers before, and your result is based on how you behave in the game's scenario.
The questions filter to a small list, and the minigame is a more action-based filtering of said list.

Although, I can understand the dislike for a personality test all the time.

But again, keep in mind.
If you are honest, it will lead to a personality test.
If you are a min-maxer, you can follow the chart someone posted above (better quality) for the personality with the stats closer to your ideal. (From what I saw online the Lothario/Vamp has the best stats on average, for which you want to go to the queen's scenario and follow the king's orders).

Just to pick one of the examples off the chart:
Do you save your favourite food for last?
Are you bothered by gossip?
And do you often dwell on the past?
All lead to
Do you think the world has more happiness than sadness?
Which leads to the boulder mini game which can give you
Tough, eager, diligent, vain or lazy

In what way do any of those questions lead to those 5 personality traits?

Honestly, I do not know enough to tell you.
But I have been trying (keyword: trying) to learn about these ever since I played the rpg maker fangame Jojo 7th Stand USer, which used a personality test to give your Stand. Not relevant right now, but just like this game it does so through a list of questions that do not seem to be in any way related to your personality. Old Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games also did something similar, to give you your initial pokémon.

7th Stand User does so through a personality test known as an enneagram, where personalities are split into 9 main categories with 2 "wings" each. Those can be split further, but 18 was enough for that game. Thing is, save for some other questions for lesser things, like taking meds for if you have a weak stomach or if you are squeemich about blood, every one of the 18 personalities also has its own dialogue in the story, and just like DQ3 many people swear for its accuracy.
Detail, it only uses this level of question in your personality test, no minigames. Basically the minigame functions as a final question here, but you were already split in personality groups by the actual questions before then.

Anyway, about the questions. They are irrelevant to the game, but they are not about a game but about you. And it may not seem so, but each of those choices you would make (if answered honestly) are still guided by your personality, even if it may seem like something too minor for you to care (or maybe exactly because it is so, you don't even think about it until asked so if you are honest it is your automatic mindset).
