It was almost certainly a licensing issue. The US distributors would have needed to pay extra for the DB license, and presumably, they decided that it wasn't worth the extra expense since nobody in the US had heard of Dragon Ball in 1986. IIRC, it wasn't released in America until the early 90s.

Whenever you see anime games reskinned into original IP for the West in the 80s/90s, that's pretty much always the reason. On the other hand, FOTNS actually did get a late-80s US release, so someone decided it was worth paying for that one. Same is true of Golgo 13, I think.
and we got all 4 NES Dragon Quest games which had Toriyama's art.

The crazy thing is we got Fist of The North Star on NES virtually unchanged, but Dragon Ball was apparently too weird for the US. lol

I had this as a kid when it first came out. Actually liked it and played it a lot. I never knew what it really was, of course. I remember watching a dub of Dragon Ball in the early 90s on Philly 57 or something and suddenly connecting the dots. If only I knew then.

Beat this game when I was 12 or 13, and enjoyed it out of obligation for being a fan of Dragon Ball and the NES.

Honestly, I played it once and for being Goku's first game (Dragon Ball Original/Classic) on the Famicom, it is disappointing because gameplay is limited both in exploration levels and in battle mode, which is reflected by Goku's limited attacks. Graphically, it's not that bad but it could have been better; however, I understand it was a game from 1986 and we couldn’t expect high graphics from the Famicom/NES due to storage terms. Musically, it resembles the anime, but there are several themes that sound different, and also, if you lose the game, you can't continue. And also, that the American localization is quite far from the Japanese and French localization, and this is reflected in the narrative, the main character, and the enemies, etc., and it is more disappointing than the Japanese and French versions.

I bought this at Good Will years ago because it was cheap. It took me a little by surprise that it was an obvious Dragon Ball game. The cartridge sticker had the same karate guy with the Shenron like dragon and the blue balls. It didn't occur to me what it represented before I bought it.

The USA version is a .unh file, which doesn't seem to work with my nes emulator (FCEUX). Really, I have never heard of .unh for nes games before.

Can we please get this in a more common format, like .nes? Thank you either way.

Thanks. Tell me if it's fixed!

Not the biggest "Dragon Ball" fan, but I find it interesting that the French version actually retained the license unlike the American release.
