Doom vs Quake

By all the WADs I'm going to assume you mean the iwads for Doom, Doom 2, TNT, and Plutonia? Possibly also Heretic, Hexen, and Strife?

If so, I'd also recommend tracking down No Rest For the Living, Sigil, Sigil 2, and Legacy of Rust if you don't have them. They're all officially bundled addons from more recent releases of Doom. Sigil/Sigil 2 are pwads for Doom 1, and No Rest/Rust are for Doom 2
Those are what I have, thanks for that I'll look into them.

quake 3 arena is the fucking GOAT man
along with unreal tournament, back in the time before unreal engine was even a thing at all 😂

they don't make fps games like they used to smh
now it's all about zooming, flying, sliding, adhd bullshit

DOOM and DOOM II, Quake might have added the 3d verticality to shooters, and some really good ambience, but DOOM will always be the father of the FPS genre and maybe one of the most influential and inmortal games of all time, it could never be overstated how DOOM changed and still changes videogames to this very day, be it vanilla or total conversion made in gzdoom like Ashes, Selaco, Supplice, Hedon, 8-bit Deathmatch and so, SO MANY others, even recently there was a new fangame in production called Fallout: Bakersfield, and you know what? it's made in GZDOOM!, Jhon Carmack sharing that source code for both Doom and Quake was like give humanity the recipe for bread.

I think that doom stood the test of time better than quake, in the sense of chaotic fps like are modern doom games. I don't think that quake was "slow" just for their own decision, but rather because it was a new 3d game, and they couldn't handle too much enemies on screen, not only for the processors of the era (plus the non-existence of gpus yet), but also because people were getting used to aim in full 3d, not just in a 2d plain. After all this, I still love quake a bit more than doom, and I really love both. I like metal music, but I like more modern metal, so doom 1 ost is not so in the mood for my taste while destroying everything. Now, quake 1 at least, is a very atmospheric game; Reznor work on the ost is marvelous, and all the dark fantasy medieval aesthetic mixed with those lovecraftian monsters, makes me feel something unique. I never felt the same with the quake 1 expansions thanks to that, those ost really suck, they're so generic lmao, but as games they're very good.

And I also love that they reused the butt texture of the cyberdemon on the shambler.

I mean Unreal Engine was always a thing they licensed out. Deus Ex, Rune, and Clive Barker's Undying are all on the first Unreal Engine. Duke Nukem Forever is on a pretty heavily upgraded version of it too.

On the whole, Quake is a rough franchise with ups and downs. Doom maintained a solid level of quality throughout even if games like Doom 3 were divisive, but Quake changed so wildly judt from Quake 1 to Quake 2 that its hard for me to stay as positive.

Quake 1 is probably my fav FPS of that decade. It is full of weird issues like a lackluster weapon roster, spawns being a positively evil and unfinished enemy type (in general it still needed 1 or 2 more enemies to round the roster out) and not really diving into its mythos or enviornments in the interesting ways that even Doom 1 and 2 did. But man, the atmosphere is just so damn sublime that I don't care. The Strogg and more generic setting of Quake 2 and 4 is deeply uninteresting to me, but Quake 1's mix of sci-fi and low fantasy is such a treat. And though I love the ost for Quake 2, Trent Reznor's ambient work on Quake 1 is some of my fav FPS music of all time, honestly.

Rambling aside, whilst my bias towards Quake 1 and high preference and nostalgia for yhe multiplayer suites of Quake Live and Champions make me want to pick Quake, I think pound for pound Doom is the better franchise, at least for single player.

How about a third option?

I'm playing through it again right now and having a blast. Probably my favorite of the official ID Doom WADs.

I personally don't like Plutonia, you have either People loving it or hating it :)
It has a lot of Ambushes and Trial and Error, so that i departs from the mixed Formula the original Games have, that also includes a good amount of Exploring, mindless Action and the Hunt for Secrets.

I made this little Picture, to show off Plutonia in a Nutshell XP

To the Main Question, i prefer Doom a lot, Quake is too brown and boring to look at.
A Trend they started with Doom 2.
Doom 1 has a good amount of diverse Textures with reds and greens.

Yeah, Plutonia definitely is a love-it-or-hate-it kinda thing. I find most people who dislike it tend to enjoy TNT: Evilution, or vice versa (I enjoy both to a degree), so Final Doom still tends to be worth it overall.

Also, that picture needs about 25-30 Revenants crammed in there somewhere too. :loldog

How's the music in Quake?

I never played Quake, but I watched my dad play DOOM when I was younger, and I enjoyed every terrifying moment. Sometimes I would play the game myself when I didn't mind inevitably getting my ass kicked, and when I did it was often to this song:
The awesome music of DOOM was what really got me interested in the game, and FPS as a genre in general. There aren't many I like, but those I do, I enjoy with a lot of awesome music.

haha i have an updated Version with one that is huge and barely visible in the sky, i just couldn't find it.

And yes, i personally did enjoy TNT more^^

But this is the nice Thing about Doom, there is so much, everybody can get Enjoyment out of it.
