PC Doom: The Legacy of Rust - How do we feel about it?

So, the most recent expansion for classic Doom (insane to say casually that a game got an expansion 30 years later. Doom will truly NEVER DIE), I wanted to know how we as a community feel about it.

I personally like it a lot, perhaps even love it, with some reservations. I feel like it can sometimes lack the snappiness of the best doom map sets, with the occasionally obtuse combat puzzle. That said, many of its new mechanics are fantastically balanced and introduced very well. It really is an expansion that builds off the knowledge you would have gained from playing Doom II, while not requiring the precision of a Plutonia Experiment.

Aesthetically is where I think it’s a true 10/10. The Soul Silo, the Shores of Heaven… so many levels are fantastic to look at and truly show what the Kex Engine is capable of pumping out! The music is possibly the best part of the expansion. I’ve been spoiler free in my review here for the most part, but I beg of you: LISTEN TO THE SOUNDTRACK! Classic Doom music from Bobby Prince will never be supplanted, but Xaser’s score is my personal favorite collection of tunes overall for any classic Doom project. It has a sad beauty to it that makes for a unique mood that no other map set has… officially anyway.

I like the Legacy of Rust and I’m fond of the collection it came with. Kinda miffed it was bundled with that set, since Bethesda can suck the big one, but I guess it’s no different than how the expansions from the 90’s were. Great map set, I just wish it was more “pick up and play” like the best maps for Doom 1 are.

It seems like it's front-loaded with very challenging maps.
When I tried the new remaster, I hadn't played Doom for so long that I really couldn't beat it. Actually, I don't remember getting stuck anywhere, but it was taking a lot of effort to play. Also we always have such good Quake custom maps, and that's more my speed. It didn't really wow me as much as Machine Games' work on the Quake games.
 
Spirit Drains and The Coiled City are fantastic levels.
Soul Silo is a phenomenal level, and the Incinerator and Calamity blade both rock.
"Brink", and the new Ghoul enemy are both total BS.
The banshee, shocktrooper and vassago enemies are all fun additions to the enemy roster.

All in all, it's a real good time.
 
I enjoyed it a good deal. It was pretty neat seeing stuff like the green Mini-Cyber's and the Heartland Flamethrower become official classic Doom canon.
 
I dont know about the ᏟDᏒ community, but I aint gonna pay 10 bucks to Nightdive for a WAD pack.

Oh, I’m sure you can find it for free elsewhere if you’re willing to do some digging.
 
Well, the thing is most people already owned Doom on Steam and just got the remaster for free. Also it's sold at bargain prices often. Considering how much content, I'd say it's worth the price.

No need I already own Doom 1 and 2. Only game I bought from them was Blood and I must say the Kex engine sucks. Also, you need to create an account on Bethesda.net to play their multiplayer map.

I'm honestly just really excited we're still getting expansions to the original Doom. I hope stuff like this can expose a newer generation to the original games.
 
I like it quite a lot. It's an excellent new WAD, made with modern community standards of design, and showing off what new things current modding standards allow for, like the new monsters and weapons, and level design. It also happens to be made with modern community difficulty standards in mind too, so a new player or returning player who hasn't kept up, will be infor a shock when they have to regular shotgun a Revenant in stage 1 lol.

All in all, it's a great addition on this new very good release of Doom. The new sourceport is a great place to get new people started into playing Doom and custom content, before they can branch out into their own sourceport of choice (if you say "but it's not GZDoom where muh Bröötal D00M?" I'm gonna hit you with a metal pipe)
