I remember letting my mom borrow my PS1 a lot so she could listen to her favorite CDs.

I also have rather fond memories of using the Dreamcast as a sort of "emergency" player to watch movies on the VCD format before acquiring a secondhand PS2 and letting it handle that bit (which, if I'm being honest, was a bit of a dumb move, considering how worn the laser was by the time I got my hands on it).

And, of course, I have used both the PS3 and the PS4 to watch Netflix and browse the internet from time to time.

What about you?

You can watch movies on the Dreamcast?!

On VCD, yeah. I think you need a special CD for it to start the player... But it's literally been decades, so I can't tell for sure if that's how it actually worked.

I maybe use my psp as a fun lil word processor/note taker. And then my ps4 (and previously my ps3) is my default bluray/dvd player.

I also stumbled on a kanji dictionary for the nintendo ds, so I use that to look things up when I'm trying to read/write Japanese. (It actually has very good character recognition from the stylus scribbling. It's pretty impressive)

Is VCD a DVD but with only the storage capacity of a CD?
Pretty much, yeah. It's also kind of stubborn, but it was a HUGE extra for me at the time, specially given that my internet was just 1 MB, so downloading movies on DVD quality was downright suicidal.

I have a softmodded original Xbox that I use to rip the game discs to the hard drive and then delete them after as a test before selling. This seems to be a more reliable than play testing for a few mins as the rip needs to read every file on the disc to successfully complete.

Nope

They're gaming consoles. I play games on them. It's why I bought them.
I respect that.

As I said on my opening post, using the PS2 as a DVD player only harmed it in the end.

I use my PSP as a music player since it does that flawlessly, I also like to take photos of the environment with my 3DS o DSi, I don't mind the incredible::coolstafy0.3 megapixels, the images have that cheap camera from the 2000s feeling and I like that, it forces me to be creative.

I respect that.

you say it was harmed in the end by that feature, but i think sony would disagree. it ranks number 1 in the world in sales with 160 million units sold; many of those sales were for the fact that it not only played dvds and music cd but games as well; making it a true all in one family entertainment system.

Yeah. My PS2 to play movies and anime, my PS3 to play downloaded MP3s and MP4s as well as blurays, and now my PS4 just for blurays. On my old Mac i used to listen to CDs all the time because i had no internet back then but i did have a bunch of CDs. :D I couldn't burn them, but i could play them. I didn't start burning CDs until my family got a Windows XP and my dad showed me Limewire. That was the only way i could listen to the OST from Full Throttle outside playing the actual game. No store sold the album at the time and asking for any CD was a pain in the ass because the people working in music stores wouldn't know what the heck you were talking about even with the band and album info. Same with anime. I asked for Sakura Wars and the dude turned up Sucker Punch.

I used to. Not so much these days.
I remember burning CDs to my Xbox 360 and using the in-console music player to put on music while I was playing some games. Borderlands and Primus made a pretty fun mix!
You could also use that music as custom entrance themes in some wrestling games!

Other than that, I have used my various Playstation consoles to play DVDs/Blu-Rays. Although, I have since bought a region free Blu-Ray player to fill that need.

I respect that.

The thing is, there is so many ways to watch and listen to stuff these days that the only reason for me to actually turn on one of my game consoles is if I actually want to play a video game.

No, I meant because it was secondhand and the laser really couldn't have taken much more than that -- it's currently on storage because it can't do much of anything anymore, which really saddens me.

oh. i guess i missed that part.
hopefully you can find a retro game store to take it to and get it repaired. if not, depending on the model, you can set up some homebrew to play games off of a hard drive or flash drive. the hard drives are supposed to reduce load times to an insanely small amount, sometimes being instantaneous.
