Regardless of whether it's movies, anime, or games, do you still care about "expert reviews"? I ask this because with each passing year I care less and less about it myself. It's probably just me, but I see more and more biased criticism: every indie game is better than a triple-A game, every Marvel movie post-Endgame is bad, every anime with a character with even slightly large breasts is fan-service and misogynistic, every indie animation on YouTube is better than any modern cartoon (adult or not). Instead of criticism helping to shape my opinion, it seems like it wants to give a 100% "reliable" and concrete answer. I know, there are things that are undoubtedly good and bad just by looking at them or knowing a little about them, but I often find myself liking and hating things that many say the opposite. That movie wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, I found that 9/10 game quite boring, I didn't find that trendy anime that interesting, etc... etc...

Not anymore.

Most of them seem to have some sort of hidden "agenda" against some devs, directors or studios and get hung up a lot on hilariously inconsequential details to justify their brutalizing of any given IP — It's all fun and games until a miscellaneous error or misaligned texture gets you to bring down the hammer or something.

Critics are a good way to get perspective when viewing media, but letting them weigh too hard on your opinion of anything is a good way to kill any and all fun you could have with it.

Danganronpa is a flawed series, and I'm sure any critic on YT could tell you that. I used to be scared of watching them cause my ego was fragile and I was very skittish at the time of playing it, so I ignored them. But now- I think I should have!
You don't have to let them sway your opinions or thoughts on a game, but it is important to get a "second opinion" of sorts! For anything. That's what I think critics are useful for.

Not since the EGM-era. Probably the only one that I actively listen to is The Critical Drinker (he has a gaming channel too)..
every Marvel movie post-Endgame is bad
To be fair– the vast, overwhelming super-majority of the absolute deluge of Marvel "content," post-Engame IS bad... if not straight-up hot garbage..

Nope, and I never really have....

Even as a teen, I didn't really care what anyone thought about something. If it looked cool or interesting to me, then I'd watch or listen to it. Regardless of the overall response to what others thought, I always just enjoyed something if it piqued my interest.

Critics? No. Reviews from other sane people that also had to pay? Yeah i check them before i buy a game.

Not anymore. I stopped caring about what critics think after i found out how many of these are biased and holds high standards not for the benefit of the art itself but because they're pedantic douches.

What i do listen to is the people's opinion about something, those that aren't paid to give a review from some piece of media they've experienced.

No because we haven't had "good" critics in a long time. Read an album review by Robert Christgau and then read one from Pitchfork. There's a boat load of difference.

Here's an example:
"But heard refracting the dusk on the Taconic Parkway or spattering through the rain on Second Avenue, its refusal to distinguish between abrasive and tender or man-made and natural is a compelling argument for their continuing to do whatever they damn well feel like." - Robert Christgau on NYC Ghosts and Flower, A

"No, I have not forgotten to put the numbers into the rating spaces above. In over two years of writing for Pitchfork, I've waited for the one album that would warrant a 0.0-- perhaps even covet the lesser o.o. In my five years of reading Pitchfork, I can only remember a couple of 0.0s, likely spouting from the scalding keyboard of Jason Josephes. Now, finally, my generation has its Metal Machine Music-- an unfathomable album which will be heard in the squash courts and open mic nights of deepest hell." - Pitchfork writer, NYC Ghosts and Flower 0.0/10.

One is seriously compelling and finding the merit to an avant-garde album, the other is just waiting for the opportunity to call an album a 0/10.

Video game reviews are the opposite: they're all waiting to give a game they enjoy a 9/10 or 10/10 and call it a day. Hence, don't listen to critics unless someone has similar tastes or looking for the merit in a game. I've given "bad" games good reviews and I've given "good" games shamelessly bad reviews. Be yourself and like what you like; just don't yuck in anyone's yum.

I actually don't really care about the rating of some movie

usually if that's not really a movie that i got interested wether from the trailer or it's an adaptation of something that i knew. Like the backroom for recent example '>'

I went to one single youtube channel that usually talks about movie, from their cinematography, acting and even some movie making theories. So several times i would go and watch some movie he recommend. Surprisingly it match my taste, soo like 40% of the movie that i watched was from that guy recommendation.

I think it's also the same with video game, i watch somone play it, found the game interesting, bought it, then play it myself.

Why would I care what a critic thinks about what games or movies I consume? They fill my stomach up and they taste great! I don't care what they have to say!

Depends on the critic and how they break down their analysis. Personally, I believe the gaming/entertainment industry as a whole, in today's modern times, is in the worst state it's ever been. That is why i'm here after all, on a retro gaming website. I'm not going to tell other people what they should and shouldn't play though, that's up for them to decide. But I do feel like there is a resurgence in arcade culture and game design, and when a critic reviews his games in a more classical lens, of course it's going to piss off a lot of people. I think it's a good thing personally.

The less time I have, the more I will dig into GOOD reviews. Numerical scores feel worthless, but a reviewer whose tastes align with mine and can eloquently speak of a games strengths and weaknesses are worth their weight in gold. They help me determine if the game is worthy of my time.

Nope, never have, ain't gonna start either.
