Do you find it hard to stick to/return to games now?

Yep. Until university and/or working we had more free time but less games to play + games back then didn't take much to finish too. I would buy some Sega Genesis games and it would take 4-6 hours to finish. After playing all the games around I would have tons of free time to spend and until a new game I would be busy with tons of other hobbies.

Now even one cutscene takes like around half an hour and especially first 2 hours of games intentionally drag on just to make people cannot get an idea on how bad the game is so they would refund it. They keep spamming tons of empty games that just aim to waste your time. They are like more fancy Facebook games now lol.

I will always want games to have meaningful gameplay despite it would take 6 hours to finish instead of empty long BS. Sometimes I'm like "I have energy to play a game for 10 hours but I'm not in the mood to watch a cutscene for 30 hours and listen to tons of conversation again" which is my main reason for why I leave new games until "I'm in the mood" for months to continue them again. Me loved the way I can get into "gameplay mode" and stay in that state until the end. New games are like boxing match but they tire you with 2 hours commercial breaks between every round which WTF is that BS? It make me wanna invent a time machine and find whoever was responsible!!! lolol
I'm not inherently against long cutscenes. They can still get me hooked, but I get what you mean. Nothing worse than one when you're not into the story or characters

Honestly only cutscene in any game I cared to watch was in Radiata Stories because how funny they are. I usually skip them if I sense they are not necessary to watch to progress in the game and if useless cutscenes ain't skipable I completely refuse to continue the game lol.

Same, it's why I wanted to finish Vagrant Story in under a week in prep for the burn out work does to my gamer soul. The most I can manage is putting up a new Sims house for the housing thread. I know I have stuff I can finish but something keeps from completing them and saying goodbye to regain space and it's not my being sentimental if I haven't opened the game in months. Meanwhile I have Dragon Age Origins's theme humming in my ear to hook up the PS3 because the Steam version would take just as long to set up.

Yesn't

After starting Online Hi-school, i got my PC, leaving me lots of space to game leisourelsy, unfortunately when i finished it i got a job in a home candy store, i am grateful of said job, but that took away lots of time to game anything new, if i replay something, is a game i has beaten lots of times before, but new stuff are rarer to get into

I have the attention span of a gnat when it comes to most media. Video games especially. Most of what's on my steam and gog accounts ready to go quick dopamine hits like arcade style games (Loved UFO 50 and Vampire Survivors)

Maybe it's because I'm much older now... Or maybe because I'm physically exhausted after each and every day, but I find it almost impossible to stick with games after just a few sessions, even if those games really meant something for me at a younger age or truly do get me excited now.

Very recently I tried going through The Sims: Bustin' Out and, after playing for two hours straight, I just couldn't get myself to return to it, even though it is my favorite entry into that series and the non-Pokemon game I played the most as a teen.

Same with Deus Ex on PS2 -- my last save has been stuck on the last level for close to a year now, despite me beating that one game dozens of times before. I just can't get the energy to finish it now

And Burnout: Revenge? That (along with GTA) is my "unwinding tool", yet it is also gathering dust like crazy.

It looks like now I need an external factor (like my kids wanting me to play) before I actually grab a controller again.

Does this ring true for you as well? I can totally believe that I'm completely burned out as the costs and efforts of living skyrocket, but hopefully I'm not alone here!
is not you, its the years of conditioning with more soft and easy to digest games that numbs the mind, distract you and makes you draw comparisons with older titles.

Most important factor, you are no longer a kiddo with only 1 responsibility, entertain yourself, you now have to entertain or provide for your kiddos now.

May I suggest a different approach to this?

Why not try exposing one of those games to your kids, tell them how you got to know it, feed their imagination with your memories and if this peak their interest, you will have a reason to play the game and show them what the game was or is all about.

Vampire Survivors is so easy to pick up and play. I think I must've put in over 200 hours at this point, between the Switch & PS versions.

These days the only thing I feel like doing is playing with my cats. Nothing is more fun than that. I still play lots of video games but I also feel kinda bored at the same time. I think maybe I played almost everything even new games seem familiar. I can complete games without even paying attention.

I honestly think I would like something like oldschool DnD with character sheets on paper and drawings and little figures to paint.

I want to get more into board games & DnD style stuff, but it's difficult finding places for that nearby

Yeah not too many shops for that anymore. There were a few that tried around here but they would go out of business fast. I always thought they need to create a store with a full spectrum to stay in business. Dnd, TCGs, pro gaming, and comics and maybe even a arcade

Some people in my area were trying to get something going as a regular thing. They'd bring their collections to a community area and ask people to kick in some money where they could, but 2020 put a stop to that.

Only with old games (before the ps2/Xbox era), if the game is "fair", not repetitive or Boring I will finish it

I used to have this problem during/after the pandemic in 2020-2023 but deactivating social medias (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram) I managed to beat almost 40 games in the past 2 years, which is a good progress. If I didn't had an abusive job I could play even more...

I feel like you're asking two different questions.

1) I have zero issues sticking to a game if I enjoy it. If I'm not enjoying it, I quit playing it. Simple.
2) I very rarely replay games unless there's legitimate replay value (multiple endings, different paths, etc) or I have a very specific craving for it like Resident Evil 1 or Final Fantasy 8.

I never force myself to play a game though. Why on Earth would I do that?

That's a beautiful idea, and one I have been attempting in one way or another since my oldest one was big enough to understand how to play.

It's certainly a very rewarding and awesome thing, but it seems that most of what I truly enjoyed as a kid or younger lad may have been a bit too hard to pick up and play -- I don't think we have been able to play anything other than SMB, Sonic and GTA. Still, you are absolutely right: that does make it worth it.

I've no problems with that, as Im an Evo Hard/Software Player/Modder.
New Gaming became stale and quickly outdated when there arent No more Innovative Progressions happens, like nowadays Games are mostly boring aa Hardware ability is at Limit.
Leaving only Games contents to be creative, but everything is already 'Seen it Once, Seen it All", mostly remakes in new clothing with new Visual Hardware that cant beat the originals innovative.

Im always stay busy into Gaming as I jump hopping around with New Tech and Revived Old Tech , like Ps3 3DTV gaming and PSVR ps4pro gaming to retro emulations. etc.
Now Im temp. finished perfect Emulation gaming, I returned to FutroGaming on PC Handheld till Next VR Gen. appears with better easier usabilty and support, popularity....
