Do video games really need inventory limits?

What is the worst possibility of a video game having no limit on what you can carry. Would the RPG be broken if you carry 999 potions? Would the FPS be braindead easy if I carry 999 rounds of ammunition? I think developers should accommodate with better game design if that were the case.

It depends, I think survival horrors need them ( if you have the resident chest , if you don't go fuck yourself) , open world games or RPGs I don't think they are necessary.

Plus inventory space if limited should be upgradable

I mean... It makes sense in the vast majority of them — you can only carry so much junk IRL, and immersion is a big part of why I play videogames in the first place.

Some makes it a deliberate challenge, too: in the original Alone In The Dark, the mirrors you need for a very specific puzzle can get destroyed if you get hit while overloaded, effectively making the game unwinnable.

I think that's neat.

Well there will be issue with how much the game itself can store the data.

But i mean if we take the limit of an integer 999 wouldn't hurt your processor at all.

And also why in the world will you need 999 potions. Just be honest you rarely use those item

I MIGHT use all my cheese wheels during the Alduin fight in Skyrim. So maybe I DO want to carry 999 cheese wheels!

Fuck wiwi, i only want to be in Aperture City with those goth mommys ::frog
Jiggly you get back here and wash the dishes or I won't take you to Aperture City this weekend! ::angrygenjin

i think inventory limits is a good way to manage items, it helps you to decide what to take and what to throw away and save your resources well
imagine a FPS with unlimit ammunition, you just fuck all the bullets and shoot em all!
it may be fun but it may be broke the whole game just spamming with the strongest weapon

Depends on the game, but can break the balancing or at least make the inventory really cumbersome to navigate.

Limits is what makes things interesting, so if you can use inventory limits in an interesting way, then yes, it's totally worth it, it's even better when the game allows you to expand those limits through skill sets or rpg elements that let you pick higher inventory limits, getting better at something is just so satisfying

I Like Inventory Management, so I enjoy Carry Limits, more important to me would be a good UI, so that I can properly organize the inventory.

Surprised this isn’t reacted enough.
But right, games nowadays can store more data now, but it’s probably not a fun thing to code. Especially if the game wants the player to know what is valuable & a commodity.

Not to mention that hoarding doesn’t make the experience any easier or exciting.

It depends. If every item has its own amount limit, I think it's necessary, but an inventory like classic resident evil games, where every item needs its space in a general inventory, then no, that's a fucking pain in the ass

Honestly, it absolutely ruins Diablo 2 for me, a game should be a minimum level of fun, not A F**KING CHORE!!!

I get it in old RE games, create artificial difficulty and increase tension and fear but in diablo 2, a game where I am absolutely a tour de force at a certain point, NO! I don't want to be managing what is in my satchel thanks you very much, I want to return the demons to their eternal slumber!!

Inventory limits promote adaptability & critical thinking, that's what I concluded years ago & that's my stance on that!
Great words of wisdom from RE5's difficulty select:

Inventory limit in any form is a part of difficulty of game and thou it's needed. Items in games are to be used. If you stack items until your inventory is full, you prove that those items are mostly useless.

I le hate it,it makes a game often unecessary long.

Playing Og harvest moon with only 3 Inventory spaces 2 for tools and one is directly for holding so technically only 2,its pain.

Not a fan of it hombre , especially in open world games where I like to hoard stuff.

Played Slay the spire recently (as a board game!)
the game limits your inventory by having a fixed route that you can only get so much before a boss.
that makes every choice tight and sometimes consider even reducing your inventory (deck) cause too much trash is clogging your options.

i feel this is why limits are important, just another vertical example of why it can be applied, its all about consoderations and its really fun to see why when its done right.

Only if it's a survival game (complete with hunger and cold mechanics).

P.S: I can make exceptions when starting items that lose their usefulness take up space along with their upgrades, thus hindering inventory navigation.
