Within this hour of twilight, I wish to introduce you to a gentle glow, an experience that lies betwixt reality and dreams. From the deepest depths of our dreams can reveal our hearts and located deeply within this lies transcribed a feeling that is unanimously shared betwixt all human souls. Love.
Are you seated, dear soul? Then let us begin a tale of an anonymous boy whose journey across the moon opened the door to our hearts once more.
It all began on a ethereal night with someone much like us experiencing his mint copy of a videogame he discovered. Videogames to us all are a trip to a land of imagination, and it is so vastly rich of potential memories to make and a lasting experience on our psyche that may in fact last with us for a vast amount of time as if a soulful mimicry of the final stroke of a piano which lasts upon a single moment, unrepeated.
In Moon, we do not play a videogame. We explore a world that lies bequeathed in an era of mystery. We visit so many different people from walks of life that fervently follow their own passions in life such as fishing all day, a knight soldier who secretly wishes to see his son again who he had to part from in such sorrowful conditions. Every step we take, every move we make in this world is filling the well of endless curiosity. Never let go of that curiosity.
With that in mind, do you know what the most important thing in this world is? It's love, my friend.
That goal for love begins with helping our grandmother who recognises us as not a strange pile of clothes that appear to be attached by a mysterious force, but their dear grandchild who went missing so many years ago during an event in the town. She gives us some money and kindly asks us to buy bread for her.
What that evolves into however is a lucid nightmare of witnessing the Hero we love and adore from our role-playing games slay innocent animals just in our backyard for experience. Every time we lay eyes on him, his gaze does not even take heed of us as we seem to be lowly and insignificant to him. People of the dear town are frightened as he rummages through pots uninvited and steals clothes from wardrobes in sake of fresh armour to equip.
In this moment of haunting lucidity, we find out that amongst the carcass of the poor creatures he's been slaying left and right in his catastrophic wake are the souls of the animals. Maybe we can do some good and save their souls with a well timed
C a t c h !
These poor animals have had their peaceful lives disturbed amongst the lands of one whose heart seemingly sunk in the freezing depths of indifference. Gentle creatures who only wished to play a harmless prank alongside many others! so I'm going to do it. Let's don our red hat and save 'em all!
There lies mysteries abound in Moon-World though, maybe we can cheer on that crestfallen guard who misses their son? That bartender seems to be asleep all day, is she awake during the night-time - and if so, what's the story behind that? Endlessly that well of fascination and suburbia of thoughts should be jotted down for notes to remember! And that's exactly what I did.
Every day, between the tranquil hours of 6-8AM, I booted up Moon, taking part of a brief but unforgettable journey that resembles a joyful eternity. Every moment I witness in this game is a backdrop to a new poem I want to write which I love oh, so much that my words that feel like a mere facsimile of what my heart truly believes. After every play session, I equipped my pen and wrote on my to-do list for that next session, writing down my thoughts on what I can do and the rumours that I heard. Because here in Moon has so many beautiful gems encrusted in its figurative earth. Every single one of those gems begins to lay adorned onto my soul as a moment that accompanies me and holds my hand everyday.
Every part of this game left a fatal dosage of love to my veins and sticks with me like a loved one. From that glorious MD system which you create a mixtape of music you buy ingame and then sort into a ocean of sound that's uniquely for your ears alone. To how I had to explore the lives of every animal and fresh face I met as I wandered around this world.
This, my beloved ladies and gentleman was my tale of discovering that love does exist within this frozen heart of mine. I just needed a way to crack the ice to release all those feelings of mine. Yoshiro Kimura alongside the many creative and beautiful minds of Love-de-Lic was the chisel I've been looking for.
It's no wonder this game which strived to create a new perspective of those RPG's that we love so much was the source of inspiration for none other then Toby Fox's Undertale which released in 2015. And to think we can trace that lineage all the way back to 1997.
Back to the Moon.
