do you think Digg can overthrow reddit? If so, do you think Digg's administrators will learn from their past mistakes?

They wont only cause both sites are unbearable and if a scenario were to play out that reddit is killed. The residents will start a sacred pilgrimage towards Digg and other sites and destroy them from the inside out. Like a parasite or a virus

likely scenario, but I'm just a bystander. I wouldn't know. Whatever happens, it's gonna make damn good entertainment.

Let me guess, they'll be using AI training, right?

No, thanks.

Tbh have never used any of them but judging both of them they are reasonably insufferable

It'll get a slight bit of attention for a few days (and that's being optimistic) after launch, then immediately drop off and everyone will go back to Reddit. How did I know that? Do I have some sort of a crystal ball? I'll never tell... ::winkfelix

EDIT: Wait an effing second, Reddit stock is plummeting? Why? Shouldn't it, like, have a massive surge right now, because everyone is using it to complain about [BANNED PERMANENTLY]? That's kind of a weird thing to be happening.

Too slow Gorse, I did use a crystal ball, and you're totally right about what's gonna happen lmao

Remember when BlueSky supposed to replace X?
If it's so great, then why so many have returned to that shithole, and still post there no matter what?

Digg to Reddit, will be what Bsky is to X. The underdog, an extra platform to disperse everyone.

Reddit's stock plummeting is kind of irrelevant since most American companies stocks are plummeting due to the policies of you know who. Digg hasn't been relevant since the early 2000's and I doubt they are making a comeback. Say what you will about Reddit, but the fact that users can pay their way into prominence in Digg makes it an inherently shitty place for internet discourse.

From what I've read, Kevin Rose wants to use AI for moderation. That should be funny. Also, he's involving the co-founder of Reddit, so I don't see how Digg is going to set itself apart much.

Reddit still has a couple of great communities where great conversations can be had (although they are not immune to controversy), so I'm not shocked that the ship is sinking... There's only so much more feedback you can get on an echo chamber.

But Digg isn't going to overtake it.

There was a time where DIgg was the main platform and Reddit was the underdog BlueSky equivalent. Things can change really quickly when shitty policies are implemented. Digg made itself irrelevant by allowing super users to control all of the articles that appear on the main pages. The articles became stealth paid for ads for whatever sites the influencers/super users were pushing.

Wow! It's almost like suggesting that they plan to start paywalling certain pages has consequences or something!

Social Media is the bane of all that is good about the Internet. Please let it all burn.
Hate to burst your bubble, but even forums like this fall under the definition.

I don't know if you appreciate the irony of posting that on a internet forum. lol.
I'd argue that discussion forums are different from typical social media, but I get that it's really subjective. There's also the status page which is more similar to a typical social media platform.

Reddit is useful when you need info on a specific niche topic, I always used to find things I am searching for on Google on Reddit, often helpful information on some rare equipment or solving a very specific software problem feel only I had, BUT ALSO someone on Reddit did.

It's somehow even worse than others for generic stuff because visible downvotes naturally build echochambers and dissenting voices make people banned for "brigading". People also get harassed by others reporting them to get an automod mental help and suicide hotlines page into their private messages. Similar to how Twitter sends people notes about German police lmao.

Mods also got absolute power in their subreddits.*

Overall recently their owners did a lot of stupid choices, spent a lot of budget on promoting streaming service that was hijacked by indie musicians sending people to their YouTube and Soundcloud, then they removed rewards, the best feature, following that banning got real hard and I dunno how it fared since, but users are now saying "fuck Spez" (the owner) on many threads.

The last ridiculous decision was banning or warning people not for what they POST, but for what they LIKE, upvoting comments that mention Luigi got people auto-banned, almost collapsing Nintendo subs on some Mario game announcement. Yeah because bots can't tell context.

And Digg is some ancient site from old internet before Facebook and Twitter got big, it making a comeback is like MySpace or Newsgrounds suddenly bought up by some billionaire who now promises it will be everything app with blackjack and AI, and... yeah.

At this point I legitimately think Google+ wasn't that bad... All social media going to shit, back posting on forums, it feels like 2006 again, where's Nyancat and won't they LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE?!

*example of how screwed the Reddit moderation ecosystem is:
Ukraine_UA is an ultra-patriotic sub that gets you banned not just for speaking russian, but English too, people got bans for linking to English Wikipedia or news sources... yet a mod insist writing in Ukrainian in latin font, which is infuriating, a competing sub r/Ukraina has the OPPOSITE rule and people get banned for speaking out AGAINST those who use russian language. And it apparently banned religion too, which is absolutely out of nowhere when targeting a majority Christian country with a significan Muslim and Jewish population.
Funniest is people mistaking one sub or the other and catching a ban because good luck navigating two minefields at the same time... in the end, the main sub to have Ukrainian-language discussion is reddit_ukr, which is a personal sub of some girl who does podcasts or something, most people have no idea who she is, but a niche group for fans of a YouTube channel replaced main subs for ENTIRE COUNTRY OF 40 MILLIONS simply because moderation isn't as draconian – which brings another problem bots and scammers where poor mods who didn't expect so much responsibily

I am sure other countries don't have it better, personally I got permabanned site-wide for writing in a moscow sub, after I said that that shithole is ugly as sin on photos Western idiots were prasing, the chorus of russophile exiles for quarantined /r/russia trying to pretend their Tolstoyevsky fantasy pseudo-empire isn't universally despised. It also reccomends us russian subs which is infuriating. YouTube used to do that with channels but most of them are now banned. Only took 8 years to stop their screaming about taking Kyiv in 2-3 days. /rant over

Internet forums are technically social media, but the term is mainly used to describe streamlined version, like seen on X and Facebook.

After all, Youtube also is technically a social media site. But I use it to watch video guides or listen to music.

I stay out of political subreddits and my reddit experience has been fine. The downvotes are annoying but I'm used to them by now. Emulation/Retrogaming subreddits are pretty solid, as well as art discussion/advice subreddits.
